I'm getting one of each of the quarters and thats it. They're kind of boring to me, much like the presidential dollar. I would love to see them bring back the flying eagle cent in to a larger commemorative. And to see lady liberty on more of our circulating coinage.
Talking about it is a good start! You never know when someone will be reading CT and come across this thread. Maybe they work for a magazine or the advisory board. Ya never know!!
The USMint could make me happy by simply letting me know exactly when the ATB 5oz coins are coming out........ But in the long term, I agree with some of the other posters, get rid of real people on our coins! Bring back Lady Liberty! No one human being deserves to be on our coinage! I have an idea who will replace Kennedy on the 1/2 too.......... I don't like it.............
But I can guarantee you that if they did, after the greatly reduced the relief and flattened the fields and other details etc, in order to make them coinable under todays requirements, they would not be all that impressive.
Sell collectibles with the option to do away with the pretty packaging. I don't need a box, a pouch, a hard case, or...really much of anything but a coin flip for a mint set, or even, to be honest, a proof coin. A large number of these coins wind up in 2x2's or some other set or album anyway. The bulky plastic case takes up space, costs money, and clutters landfills.
Nooooooooooooo!! Stop recycling old coin designs like the Buffalo, Walking Liberty, St. Gaudens, etc. And stop with the "limitedl edition" nickels, and pennies, etc. How about just changing the design of ALL of our coins on a regular basis - say, every 30-40 years or so? Hunting for old, discontinued, coins in change would add a lot more fun to collecting. And no more Politician-Worship - get ALL of the politicians off our coins! Let's go with American symbols, like maybe the Golden Gate bridge, or a symbol of a baseball player, or the Empire State building, or the Statue of Liberty, or the Apollo spacecraft, or a Turkey, or a Conestoga wagon . . . so many possibilities! And BTW, why do you trash quarter collectors? The state quarters and presidential dollars are not my personal favorite things either, but the quarters was something that got my daughter and a lot of other kids interested in coins, so I don't like calling it "stupid."
Yep,I'm afraid you're probably right. When I first saw the drawings for the new shield cent I thought it might be a throwback design but after seeing the design on the actual coin I wasn't all that impressed with it. A little more relief would have helped it a lot.
Quite agree Virginian. That program re-vitalized the hobby and brought in/back a lot of collectors.....
I gotta agree I'm sure alot of people have been brought into numismatics because of the state quarters and the westward journey series. When I got my 1st package from the mint, it was only 2-2 roll sets of the bison nickel and 2- 6 coin P,D, and S, 2005 westward journey nickel sets. I was pretty proud of what I got...not to say they were or are a great coin but that spark they gave me drove me to want to collect coinage and also look into other types and series...now I'm getting BU rolls of nickels and wheat cents among the buffalo and jefferson nickels, mercury dimes, roosevelt dimes, standing liberty quarters and washington quarters... Every time I find a 2005 bison nickel in circulation I always take a few seconds to look at it and usually remember that 1st roll of bison nickels I opened
What would make me happy would make most of you unhappy. 1. Stop making Cents, even for Mint and Proof sets 2. Stop making Half Dollars, even for Mint and Proof sets 3. Stop making Dollar coins UNLESS One Dollar Federal Reserve Notes are eliminated 4. Stop making NCLT's regardless of metal content
Don't trash the Sacagawea dollar! It's currently my favorite circulating design. Though I don't particularly care for the changing designs now (the eagle was pretty cool!).
Why not use silver for coins. Make them a high enough denomination that people won't melt them. Forget the gold coins unless they are valued at a price higher than the gold standard could reach. Then they will cost more to hoard. (I can image what China would do with the copying of this idea.) Or scrap all coins and go to cards instead. Buy a $20.00 card to use for change and reload it when the change is gone. Loose the card and the max your out is $20. OR : Stop the dollar bills and use the dollar coins in the slot to the left of the quarters. Make the $2 bills to be used in the dollar bill slot. Get rid of the halves totally for circulation. Give us coins that people would keep instead of throwing them in the street. The pattern coin designs could be used. http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1879_MorganDime_J-1587_PR_65_RD.jpg http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1871_Longacre_One_Dollar_Pattern.jpg http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/marthaquarter.jpg Make the design of the bills more interesting. http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1896__1_Educational_Large_Note.jpg http://imgs.inkfrog.com/pix/coop49/1896__2_educational_large_note.jpg
