I am not sure if this is the right area to post this question. I recieved a few british pound coins where scotch tape was used to keep the coins from rattling during shipping and was wondering if there was a safe way to remove the glue from the tape. The coins are circulated. Thank you Mizu
Pure acetone will do it. Soak for a few hours, then remove. If it's not completely gone, dab some toilet paper or some other soft cloth on the remaining residue (do NOT rub), and repeat. It will come off eventually.
I concur that acetone is the best thing I have used. However it doesn't do anything for the toning. I was not able to fix the copper coins that had tape on them that toned except for underneath the tape. The silver I was able to somewhat restore by bathing them in a baking soda/salt water bath in an aluminum bowl. I did not scrub, but let the chemical reaction remove the sulfates. At least they turned out the same color. lol If these are very rare or expensive coins, I would suggest sending them in to be professionally restored. Good luck with them. gary
Good point about the toning, but I suspect the OP is not interested in stripping the coin of toning, but rather just removing the adhesive left behind after removing the tape.
