Just wondering if anyone can tell me more about this coin, it's a metal detecting find... From what I can tell it's an Edward I coin from between 1272-1307 and it was minted at the Waterford Mint in Ireland. what sorta condition is this? and a lil macro for ya too
Very cool find, silver Irish Farthing I believe, from the photographs I would say Fine condition, but its scarcity outweighs that. See here. http://hammered_farthings.tripod.com/edward-i-farthings/waterford.htm
Very nice find! Wish we had those in the ground here in the US! Ive been thinking about purchasing one of those for quite a while. What county was it found?
The size differs from the examples shown in the link. Why not contact the author and ask them, contact details are at the bottom of the link. Still a nice find, I`ve only ever seen one before and I`m knee deep in hammered coinage when I go detecting where I live.
it was found in Newent close to Gloucester in England....I've read that alot of the Irish coins minted by Edward I were sent over to England to pay troops which didn't help the Irish economy.... funny because I live in Waterford where the coin was made and have never found one here!
My wife and I have been to Ireland MANY times, Ive tried to find coin shops there when ever we go but no luck. Ireland is without question, one of the most beautiful places on earth. Congrats on the find!
Thats what I love about waterford, theres so much history here, the old walls and towers are still here, the building these coins were minted in still exists, i was in there last week it was built around 1000AD, the original coin dies are still there too! they were made in the round tower in the pic below called reginalds tower
That is too cool! We've been to Waterford but never there! I'm adding that to the list for next time for sure, thanks for posting those pics! That is my favorite part of Ireland, it just oozzes history even more so than England. Our favorite spot is St Kevins in Glendalough, it is heaven on earth. There is nothing like those valleys anywhere, ok I'm ready to go back now!
Its definately an Edward I penny from Ireland, and as you point out, from the Waterford mint. This is a second issue Irish penny minted between 1281 and 1282. Here's a link if you want some more info... http://www.irishcoinage.com/EDW1.HTM I'd put this into the fine / better than fine category for grading.
