SGS Slabs

I know these are way over graded, but how badly? I've seen some (OK alot) of Jefferson nickels SGS slabbed MS70 on ebay. Now in my mind to be MS70 they have to be flawless including the steps. So if they are calling MS65 FS a MS70 there might be some good deals to be had, some of the prices these go for are a lot less than MS65 PCGS and NGC graded stuff. What should I care if I get a nice MS65 coin in a SGS MS70 marked slab if I've paid accordingly and plan to break it out of the slab.
Does this make sense, or is the over grading go even beyond my comprehension. I have on occasion bought stuff from bottom tier TPG's for a few dollars to see what there grading was like and for the most part got what I paid for and expected but on occasion have been suprised by the quality grading. I've never bought SGS mainly because He (this is not a service but an individual) grades everything MS70 which is impossible for starters.
Has anyone bought or looked at any of these to see just how badly over graded the stuff really is?

First, Star Grading Service (SGS) is NOT a legit grading service by any stretch of the imagination. They are owned and operated by the eBay powerseller, Aboncom who takes coins, slabs them as MS70 or PR70 (for about 99.9% of them) and then sells them to people that believe they are buying an independent, 3rd partied graded coin.

There is NOTHING 3rd partied about this. In my humble opinion, he goes to his local bank in Ohio and gets a bunch of bank rolls and goes through them to pull the "pretty" ones and they are then sold via eBay as a perfect 70 coin.

Their certificate of authenticity is only good for bird cage bottoms.

Another collector bought some SGS coins and sent them off to PCGS (I believe) for grading and these SGS "graded" PR70 coins came back as:

    1 - 03370368 1960 1C Large Date USA PR66RD
    2 - 03370369 1970-S 1C Large Date USA PR66RD
    3 - 03370370 1974-S 1C USA PR66RD
    4 - 03370371 1976-S 1C USA PR65CA

He did that just to prove a point that what he got was in fact NO WAY NEAR a 70 grade. Keep in mind, these are for PROOFS and it gets worst for MS grades.

So, take my advice...stay with PCGS, NGC, ANACS and ICG and sometimes you may get lucky with SEGS and PCI. The rest of them are pure trash and even if you deduct points, you will be out some hard earned dollars. Let's put it this way, if you have some coins you would like to buy that are MS70 grades, PM me, because I have my own "grading" service too! Please note the gold foil tape for your "protection".

Go ahead and search this forum and others for SGS or Star Grading Service and you will see for yourself! Think of SGS as putting lipstick on a pig...you can only do so much with makeup and perfume to dress up junk.

If you can see the coin IN PERSON and can grade it yourself...I see no problem with buying one...I have in the past.
The coins wern't anywhere near the grade that SGS said but they were nice coins.
If I were you I wouldn't be buying one over ebay...you just can't see the photos good....but if you were at a show...go for it.

If you know how to properly grade coins, and you can see the coins in hand - gems can be found in any slab. It happens, just not very often.

    With SGS, it's purely accidental.

    Hi SPEEDY
Form 1938 TO 2004 N.G.C. HAS NEVER GRADED A JEFFERSON NICKEL HIGHER THEN MS68. THE ONLY MS69 COINS GRADED ARE THE 2005 P&D SMS COINS. And they have only graded one coin ms-70 and that was the 2005-p sms bison. This info is from the n.g.c. census report on there web site. I know ebay sells a lot of sgs coins but if I have to pay for a ms-70 coin. I wont it to be just that. So i will stay with ngc or pgcs.

Of course, it almost always is - with any of them. I probably should have clarified my comment further. It's not unheard of to find a coin graded by a bottom tier TPG say as MS65, that when sent to PCGS or NGC get's graded as MS67. So it happens both ways, but it's certainly not common.

Just calling SGS (Star Grading Service) a third party grading service is just plain incorrect!! All they are is a front! A front to the ebay seller Aboncom who takes coins from rolls and proof sets and then sells them as "perfect" coins or one's that are the highest of all grades available! Unless all of the 70 coins happen to be ending up in Ashland, Ohio, is there any other explanation??

Their "slab" and "certificate" are part of their packaging and marketing...nothng more!! PLEASE, let's call it for what it is.

As an example, go ahead and put a gold foil on a beer bottle and try to charge more for the beer. Print up a form that a master brewer actually brewed the beer you are drinking and you will likely dupe a bunch of beer drinkers into buying your beer, until they taste it. At that point, the beer drinker is thinking, "This is crap!" and most likely will not purchase the product anymore.

What Aboncom/SGS is doing is no differant. They are preying on those that really think the coin they are getting is graded and certified like other TPG's, when obviously it is not.

If SGS were a legit grading service, you would likely see them listed here:

    http://www.greysheet.com/

But guess what? They are NOT a legit service. They are a SELLING service, nothing more as part of Aboncom to pump as many coins into the numismatic community until collectors wise up!

So wise up! Pass the word to as many other collectors, especially the young ones, so they know the real deal about this outfit!

I realize what SGS is and what the sellers is doing but I was wondering if he's packaging MS65 or 66 coins as MS70 and I know this and buy one below the MS65 market price to break out to put in an album am I not ahead? Or does he package everything MS60 and above as MS70?
I willing to bet he sends the real high grade stuff to a real TPG himself.
However, I'm watching and just may buy a resale from one of his victims for a couple of $ to see for myself how badly the over grading is.

    sgs

I think you could look at sgs two ways, if you can buy the coin at a good deal for the actual grade (not sgs 70), then buy it. On the other hand I would not want to patronize their questionable practices.

You will have better luck going through bank rolls finding decent MS strikes instead of dealing with this fraud outlet...

It is pretty much what SGS does.

There's an article in the new CoinWorld about grading companies that is worth reading. It mentions Sgs:hammer:

Well, I did it. I purchased my first SGS MS70 coin! Of course I have no possible dream of recieving a MS70 I only bought to see just how bad the grading is.
It's a 1980P Jefferson for a grand total of $2.95 including S&H. I probably paid $2.90 more than its worth but I had to see one of these for myself!

What about the UGS slabs? I have seen a lot of nickels on ebay in these slabs and most are never graded over MS 65. Are these over graded bad. They sell for a lot less and I was thinking one might could get a good deal on these. Unless there MS65's are actually AU 50's.
