Comparing my large cent to some on Heritage i think this might grade a VF20 from a reputable tpg, but I'm no expert and was hoping some more experienced folks might chime in with their opinions. It's amazing to me that if you look at enough pictures of the same year of a certain coin, the grades that are the "same" look very different:eek:

    Thanks in advance!

From what I can tell, it looks like the VG-F coins that I was buying in the '90s. But it seems that grading standards have changed dramatically since then.

That seems about right; I think the ANA Grading Standards would call this coin VG10, maybe F12. Hard to say without better photos.

    TPG grade: F details, corroded.
    ANA grade: F-12 or VG-10
EAC grade: VG details, avg-, net G-8
    Mike's grade: $25

All IMO, of course, and based on the photographs that lack a bit in focus/detail. and I'm concerned I may be overstating the surface problems.

Neat coin, by the way. I like it. :)

For comparison, here is an 1838 that I bought as a VG-F in 1996:

And another example....here's one from the same date I picked up on eBay in 2005 for $22:

The first images were scans here are some photos...Still learning about photographing/imaging coins. Does it still look corroded?

Yes. Likely cleaned at one time too.

Doesn't necessarily make it a bad coin. The vast majority (to include all those posted in this thread) have one problem or another.

    Nice 38's:D
Here is a pic i just took of my other 1838....this one has better details but it has had a rough life sometime, bent and what appears to be road-rash/corrosion.
On a side note i think i just stumbled onto taking better pics with my camera.

Yes, those are much better (the picture at least, that coin's had a rough life :) ).

It's pretty much nailed as a VG-F details with the usual rough life. This is why a problem free coin carries a significantly higher premium. (or at least it did before Ebay)
