Hi guys- It's hard to capture in pics but 80% of my FDM covers have frosty Philly dollars. They seem to be textured on front and back making them not so shiny. Any thoughts as to what could account for this? At first I thought they were satin finish but they are a lot grainier than that... PS: the 3rd pic is the reverse of the Philly.
Here's a comparison to a satin and a bus strike. I moved the coins into the same light w/o changing the camera. If it is a satin finish, do y'all think it would have value as something that isn't supposed to be in the FDM covers? And if it isn't satin, what's up?
These coins are satin finished as are all of the FDM Presidential Dollars. This is nothing unusual. To the best of my knowledge all of the US Mint packaged "circulation" strike coins have a satin finish.
None of my other Prez dollar FDM covers have a satin finish, I usually get at least 5 of each Prez. I think the satins are only on the Annual Uncirculated Mint Sets and Uncirculated Dollar Sets, not on the coins struck on the First Day of Mintage. PS: the First Spouse/ Prez Dollar sets are satin too.
you may be right, but the coins that you have posted are satin. Maybe this reflects a change in what the Mint is striking first? I dunno, just a thought, but you're right, it should be a regular finish on a FD issue.
I always thought the FDM covers were business strikes and not satins but could be wrong. It is possible that the mint packaged some of the covers with satins. There have been posts on CT in which people have found mint bags with satin quarters or cents. Nice finds. TC
Cool, I didn't know that. I guess it would be hard to prove it though unless the whole bag was TPGed. I was always disappointed that the TPGs that found Missing Edge Errors in rolls they opened themselves (for FDIs) couldn't attribute a mint to the coin... Just to be clear, the Buchanan is the FDM pic, the Tyler satin and Tyler bus strike are not FDM, just pictured for comparison.
Is it also possible (due to the early release of the Uncirculated Mint sets this year) that the first strike for the last 2 coins were struck in satin first and therefore ended up in these packages? Just an off-the-wall thought...
I'm guessing they didn't plan to but that sounds like a reason it would happen. 20% of my covers have a regular strike; I'm waiting for my second order to compare...
Business strikes struck with dies that had been prepared for satin finish production but then rejected?
I just got 5 more--4 out of five are satin... looks like the Bus Strikes Phillys are the rare ones! (All Denvers are BS)
