I too would like to thank the people who take the time to help out with the many questions on here. Even though I`m more of an older bullion and ASE collector/investor, I do have some coins that have numismatic value. If it were not for this site my interest in many other coins and even paper money would not be growing like it is.

The friendly and helpful people on here are not only aiding in ones` quest for info, but are also helping to promote their respective hobbies........which is often overlooked and easily forgotten, as it is something that all of Us should be doing more often.

Interesting Thread. One which I will take the time to respond to.

The experts you speak of are still here, you just have to ask the right question to get their attention. a simple "Whats my coin worth?"... that's going to get skipped over by MOST of the seasoned veterans of the forum. Mike made a good point with something he said in his post.. If you have a question about a coin do a little research, if nothing else it will help you ask a question that WILL get noticed. Use the "experts" time as you call them wisely.

Want an expert on an error coin? Describe the coin in question and direct it to the right people. Have a question about Bust Halves? I search the threads for Bust Halves.. Got a question about milking a cow.. ask a farmer..

Lehigh states that most threads and coins are dreck and that's holding the "experts" away. Sorry, I disagree with that statement 100%. You simply have to wade though the threads and find on that has an interest to you. See a thread you want to read, READ IT.. see one that does not interest you? ie.. whats this coin worth... just skip it.. I keep seeing people here posting a +1 and nothing else.. What the heck is that all about? what a waste of time.. just trying to get your post count up? If you don't have something useful to say or useful to add to a thread, put another spoon of potatoes in your trap and move on to the next thread.

I recently had a conversation with an "expert" about coin forums and ask this person why they didnt spend time in them answering questions. ANSWER.. "I don't have the time NOR the desire to answer a question about a very basic error/variety and then get into an argument with the person about why they are not going to hit the lottery with it". How many times have we seen this?

Where have the Experts gone? Again, ask the right question, there are plenty of experts here and all over the internet. Most "experts" will assist you when they can and when they read a thread that they can truly give a definitive answer to. How many times have YOU read a thread and were certain the person that posted right above you gave the wrong information about? why answer a question if you dont know the answer, does that make you look smart? Does it make you feel important? Makes me question every post I ever see from that person again.. Is it a right answer or just some BS they are pulling out to feel smart..

Ok, off my soapbox.. what is an expert? I guess my feeling is somebody that has more knowledge on a subject then me! Doug is an expert on Ducats, Mike is an expert writer, Treashunt is an expert on Red Books, the list goes on...

Ok, now GD can reprimand me.. use a willow stick....

No problem with any of that. I can perfectly well understand why you don't read everything and why even if you do you do not respond. Sometimes it is best not to post, especially if frustrated with repeated topics. I have been a moderator on a work related forum for 9 years - and I have had this same discussion with several regulars - post politely or don't post. Just like this forum people move in and out all the time.

This is also why some dealers get bad reps - there are always going to be new people joining the hobby. Both YN's and older folks will ask the same question - if both parties are polite you establish a working relation that in the coming years might generate bigger business(or better posts). In this forum today's new members might very well be the people responding to the new members of tomorrow - and you might just see they are saying what you said for years.

Once again I agree - no reason to post if you know they are going to argue. You get that with some posters, but you don't have to assume every poster is going to argue. Again I agree with the concept.
True - forums have people coming or going all the time. I think it is the variety that makes this place unique and the opinions that get expressed make it better than forums associated with a service organization. And you know what - you basically said the put across the same concepts in reasonable manner. And guess what - did you notice how much I agreed? I can certainly understand why you do what you do and why I might read more posts (certain forums only) than you do. Some of the threads get entertaining. Now I need to go see what that lady did when she went into the pharmacy.

And yes I know the question was in general - but you have gotten ride of me yet. :)

Aside: Jim is a well known expert in Bust half Dollars and has helped me on numerous occasions.....even when I didn't ask the right questions......:)

My guess is that some questions don't get the attention that they might deserve, because their thread titles are so vague that many posters don't bother to look. I admit to being guilty of that on many occasions. I think it behooves those with questions, to do what they can to make those questions clear, just from the thread title.

Okay - someone can correct me if I am wrong - I thought they were agreeing with your post. And a -1 means they disagree. Of course without explaining why that doesn't make sense.

Yes, my understanding is that a "+1" indicates agreement with the post it references.

i agree with this assesment. the amount of ppl and threads coming up would be too much for most ppl who simply want to give expert opinions on cream of the crop coins or questions.

I think lots of folks are really busy. They still drop in but can't look at every thread.
Mark has a great point about thread titles. Make them clear.

Everybody's getting pretty smart. Questions are either so difficult I can't answer or so easy that it's better to let someone else answer.

At CU "+1" only means you've found an adequate excuse to increase your post count by one.

I don't see it used much here.

I won't open badly titled threads at most sites.

Here, I'll hold the cursor over the title but frequently they don't even get to the point in the first 50 words. I never open these.

I have wondered if the posting numbers statistic doesn't have a negative effect, in that newcomers are often anxious to increase their numbers and appear to have more experience than they actually have and produce many "me too" answers . But many take pride in the number of posts they have answered over a long association, so I guess it is something that has to be lived with. I wish the software wouldn't count anything under 5 words as a post, but as I said..... I will read many more threads per day than I will answer.

I agree except that I'd make the cutoff at three words. Some of the best posts are very short and sweet.
