So, am I understanding correctly that it wont be very beneficial to search for ANACS coins hoping that I can get a better grade at PCGS and reap the financial benefit ? And that I don't need to send my raw things to PCGS just for a higher grade than ANACS might give ?

Yes - if you know what you are doing then you can search for ANACs, ICG or any of the other graders slab and cross them to NGC or PCGS. You might get a bargain or two since some of the coins go cheaper.

It's not as simple as that. There are plenty of coins in the old ANACS holders that would stand a good chance of crossing over, or even being upgraded if submitted to NGC or PCGS. And there may be a few coins in the new ANACS holders that could do the same. But I would place the odds for those in the new holders as being very low.

What Mark is saying is 100% accurate. There have been more than a few examples of coins from any slab being crossed or upgraded by NGC or PCGS. But you have to really know your coins to be able to pick those out of the thousands that are drastically over-graded.

""Any comments?" Yes, your thread title is needlessly and far too vague. Why not let people know what the thread is about, without having to open it?

Edited to add: I do not think it is worth resubmitting.

The original purpose was mostly to extol Strikeluster's generosity. Sorry to offend you with my needlessly far too vague title.

I'm not familiar with that reference, nor was I offended.

This may be beneficial if you can find correctly graded ANACS,ICG, and submit to PCGS or NGC because the second tier services do get it right quite often, but the prices are generally lower. But this method also means that your grading skills must be pretty solid.

I am glad you are pleased, was that a fast contest or what. I sent in 5 78CCs just to try out TPG. You should see the one they graded MS61 the others were just EF,s. I cant seem to get the whole photo thing down, but I will try to post the 61 for you guys to see. Bad photos I know but its my state of the art right now.

I figure there is a pretty good chance this one is also graded wrong, but I am not too sure whether it is cleaned or MS.

Its MS for sure Im always on the watch for wizzers, JMO if photos were better you would see its proof like, but ANACS makes no mention of it. Keep me posted just for kicks if you decide to send it out for the upgrade, thats the whole reason I was trying out TPG"s in the first place. Next Im going to send 5 78P Morgans to NGC and see how I fair.

Steve - you would probably have better success, and save some money, if you posted pics of the coins before you submit them. Also, if you are trying to test your own grading ability I think you would be better served to send all future submissions to the same TPG.

Then once you get your own grading figured out, that is the time to test the grading of the various TPGs, not before.

edit - harsh cleaning and whizzing are two different things. Just because a coin has been harshly cleaned, that doesn't mean it has been whizzed.

Yes, that all sounds like one big wise move. I am not understanding the light placement thing for photos. I am trying but only have weekends to work on it.

It depends on what you are trying to show about the coin. Showing fine detail is pretty simple. Just get adequate light, two 75w bulbs, on the coin and take your pic straight on and you'll get the detail. Assuming everything is focused.

But to show luster or color is more difficult. But it's just like when you view a coin in hand - you tilt & turn the coin under the light so you can see the luster or the color. The luster or color doesn't always show up well when viewing the coin straight on, and that's why you tilt and turn it - because luster & color can sometimes only be seen at an angle.

It's the same thing with a camera. The camera replaces your eyes and the angle between the light source, the coin, and the eye of the camera, is what determines what the camera will see. So you just have to experiment by slightly changing the angles between those 3 things - the light, the coin and the camera - to get the picture you want.

Make sure you use the right kind of lightbulbs as well - GE Reveal bulbs work quite well.

And turn off all other lights in the room, and close the drapes/blinds.

Took that coin to 2 dealers today. The more knowledgeable said that it has been over-dipped and figured there was a 90% change PCGS would not grade it and a 75% chance NGC would not grade it. He also said it would probably be unc. Pretty much the second agreed, but did not elaborate much more than to say it would not grade.

BTW, this is in no way any negative to Strikeluster.
