Anyone still think the 09-S VDB is really rare? http://shop.ebay.com/ankermanw/m.ht...c&_sticky=1&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_sop=1&_sc=1
Wow. Wish my Ebay auction site looked like that. To answer your question, yes, I still think they're rare. Relatively.
Relatively being the key word. I think the only reason they are "rare" is because they are popular. If noone wanted them, they wouldn't be "rare" anymore because they would be easy to get. Its all a matter of opinon I guess. Its only "rare" if the general population thinks it is.
I've always been surprised at the so-called rarity of that cent. It seems there is no shortage of them. Even here in Winnipeg, Canada there are a couple of dealers at the show I attend that have them. They are in very low grades but nonetheless they're here.
Another guy recently sold 8 MS65 or higher red 90-s vdb. 1909-s have much lower populatioin than 1909-s vdb.
Bingo! With thousands of collectors pursuing them, that drives the price. They are not really rare, it's estimated that over 60,000 survive today.
http://www.empirecoins.net/shop/index.php?l=product_list&c=4 Here are 17 more; I've never considered them rare, just barely on the scarce side if that...
me TOO! and since it's an error missing the "S" I'll be willing to sell it for a low premium of only $49 99. 95! that's right! only $49 99.95! please send checks payable to CRAZY CARL's nut house and coins corner of extreme value and worth too! @.@ I can pm you the address later after all the spamming that will happen on this thread had calmed down concerning this rare coin of coins! p.s. anyone other then me and 10gary22 that has a 1909 VDB with no "S" is holding a chinese fake! and needs to just send it to me so I can dispose of it properly
Well - those aren't rare either. I found one also. As to the original post - I think most dealers most of the time have a S-VDB in stock. This is clearly a case of the demand driving the price. I think the samething happens with some of the earlier coinage also - like bust halves. Seems certain R1 varieties drive a premium because they are so popular.
s'vdb's are "desirable" not scarce. similar to signed photographs of robert e. lee.....still sell in the $5,000.00-$7,000.00 price range, but there are numerous examples extant.
