November Coins Magazine lists 1879 S $48.50 in MS63 ($410 if 1878 Reverse), so price is about right. Probably is worth the drive if your interested. Looks like a nice coin!:)
    Good Luck!

If it's indeed a "63" then he's ballpark, however, he doesn't indicate if the coin is holdered by one of the major TPG'ers and you really can't tell too much from his pics.

    Welcome to the forum Merlin....:)

    Thanks for the quick response!
What I dont get is how can a coin same year, same date
same grade, have a different price? He said he has been collecting
for 20 years and he graded all of them conservatively.
Here are others he has listed:

    http://southjersey.craigslist.org/clt/1988550754.html

Here is the complete list of what he has:

    Thanks again for the input!

At least you will have the opportunity to see them in-hand to decide for yourself if his self-grading is reasonable.

One word of caution: Make sure you agree to meet him at a "neutral" location. Do not divulge where you live. There have been a few instances of scumbags using Craigslist to gain entry to homes to rob them.

Well, one he lists as DMPL, which stands for "deep mirror proof like". Coins designated as such always command a higher premium.

The mirrors of his "DMPL" didn't look to be deep enough to get the attribution, but it may be because he took the photo at a bad angle. As I said, at least you will have the chance to inspect them before buying anything.

Imo, $45 is too much for a raw '79-S SAF in low grade MS. $45 is right around what graded examples are going for. The '79-S is very common, personally I think around $30 is a fair price for a common low grade uncirculated Morgan.

Thanks Raider, yes it is raw and he has graded it. That does concern me too. I LOVE Morgans but the better coins are a little out of my price range right now.
That is why I asked you guys/girls for some input. Im assuming the prices are high because silver is going thru the roof. I really want a couple REALLY nice examples,
I dont need a "CC" just a nice coin or two.

Thanks again! Any and ALL info in much appreciated!

You can definitely find some nice Morgans in that price range. But for $45 I think it would be better to buy a graded 63, so you know what you're getting, rather than buying a raw one for the same price. But if you prefer raw, I would try to get the price down closer to $30, because you don't want to overpay. (That's assuming the coin is a 63 too, and I can't really tell from the pics.)

This '79-S SAF MS63 (PCGS) just sold a few minutes ago for $38.38 with $2 shipping: 1879-S Morgan Dollar (MS 63) PCGS

No, it is not worth the asking price. You should be able to get a PCGS or NGC certified MS63 for less than that, and there is no assurance that the one you posted grades MS63. If you didn't already know that (and because you probably aren't expert at grading), you stand a very good chance of over-paying for whatever you buy.

I'm far from being an expert with Morgans that is for sure! I think I'm gonna stick to NGC/PCGS for a while, at least until I'm comfortable with them. I have
most all the decent grading books that are out there. Guess I'll learn about Morgans next!
    Thanks Mark!

Thanks for the link raider, I think you guys sold me on letting it go. This is such a great fourm! It's kinda like having another conscience! LOL!

If you don't already have it, A Guide book of Morgan Silver dollars 3rd edition (2007) by David Bowers is a great starting book.

Books and images certainly can help, but are no substitute for hands-on experience. If you ever have the opportunity to attend a coin show and review coins with a knowledgeable collector or dealer, it might be of immense help.

Very True Mark and I couldnt agree more, books are a good starting point
but nothing beats hands on experience. I recently joined a local coin club for that
    very reason.
