Surfing the Bay the other Day (that rhymes) and came across an 1853 Arrows dime. Thought it was a good deal and reviewed his 300+ feedbacks with no negatives. Then wanted to look at the coin again today before it got here in the mail and I'll be darned the guy now has a negative. Can I ask a few questions from the experts: - genuine? - How would you grade? Only $6.50 in the end, but want to ease my mind. I am a 1 year collector and still certainly cutting my teeth. Thanks in advance. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270643904584&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT
Well not an expert, but nothing pops that makes it not genuine. I would call it F details for what looks like a possible harsh cleaning.
Nothing to make me think its fake. Harshly cleaned I think. Not a bad deal. And if all the other feedback was good, somebody probably just got mad. Eventually, every seller is going to get a grumpy person that leaves negative feedback.
I don't see "cleaned". Toning around devices indicates to me that it hasn't been dipped. And I don't see any hairlines indicating abrasive cleaning (but that could be the image which isn't all that good). Appears to be a black & white picture which makes eye appeal tough to judge.
Keep in mind the one negative was from a shady guy who hides his own feedback rating and doesn't say anything was wrong with the coin. I never listen to any feedback if they hide their own. Hard to say about the cleaning, but looks like scratches or graffiti. I would suspect old cleaning due to the dull surface, but wait to get it in hand. Photos are hard sometimes. I wouldn't suspect its false based on the photo.
Save a picture and compare it to the coin you receive. At $.44 postage it's going 1st Class with no Safe-T-Mailer and implies minimal protection which could damage the coin in the automatic canceling machine.
I'm going to repeat something I said several months ago. Don't just say "cleaned" and leave it at that. Tell us WHY you think it's been cleaned. You'll note that I said why I thought it wasn't (or possibly wasn't) cleaned. I (and others) can learn from educated observations/opinions.
I feel it has VF details opposed to the consensus of F due to all of the reverse denticles being defined and the majority of the obverse denticles are still apparent. the details on her face are still very noticeable as well as the detail on the bow and wreath. The last dead giveaway that the coin posses VF detail is the details on the stars. I feel that the coin is possibly corroded because of the pitting that is noticeable not only on the devices but in the field also. The scratches found on this coin dont scream cleaned to me because they are too large and distracting. Cleaning scratches will usually be extremely fine lines. I might also add that all we can tell from a black and white photo is details. to determine the actual state of the coin will have to wait for an actual picture.
