Even though I mostly collect/invest in bullion I do like graded ASEs, including proofs. It seems that almost all of my PCGS and ICG pieces have started to tone (very slightly) whereas the NGC pieces do not. Despite no container being completely air tight, I think the NGC does a better job with sealing them. (but the only thing that I have slabbed are ASEs, so I`m a novice regarding the grading services) I`d like to hear some opinions from others on here that have different numismatics that are slabbed.
NGC all the way...like there old fatty slabs but also have a couple green PCGS....those 2 cos. are all I buy (99% of time ) and really cant go wrong
I dont have many graded coins but the ones I have purchased I tend to like the NGC holders more. The coins tend to look better against the white.
In summary, I like the white NGC holders & sometimes submit coins to both NGC and PCGS. You can do a search on this subject and you will find some previous threads discussing many details of CoinTalk member's TPG preferences.
Cole is right, none of them are airtight. The newer slabs are generally better than the old ones. Airtites are even better. That said, ASE's are about the MOST reactive coins out there -- you can think of it a numismatic canary in a coal mine -- so if any coin is going to tone in a slab, it's going to be an ASE. Bottom line: If you want your coins to remain as pristine as possible, limit the temperature change, humidity, and airflow around them. Slabs do a partial job, but the immediate environment around the slabs is just as important. All of the above IMO and based on my own personal experience while recognizing the opinions and experiences of others may vary....Mike
Just some food for thought I personally like attractive toning that makes a coin look its age. If you have a 1923-S Lincoln in MS67 RED then toning might not be considered a good thing.
Coins that I pickup in a trade or estate sale or something like that. were I do not know what has been done to the Coin.I use Anacs. But if I know the coins past I use Ngc or Pcgs
@Jello : Why do you prefer ANACS? Is it because they overlook cleaning or are less conservative in their grading?
Because ANACS doesn't charge as much for grading. Why spend the extra money (for NGC or PCGS) if you're not sure of the outcome. Chris
I hear NGC is the best. Although I don't have any of their slabs. I mostly buy PCGS coins but after hearing that they sometimes slab fake Morgan dollars by mistake. And their customer service is not as precise as NGC's.
Anacs finds cleaned coin 99.9% & plus there fast!Anacs is my 1st ck at $10.00 then I use Ngc or Pcgs I had this 1885-O Morgan Dollar one at Pcgs 3-4 months All they need to do is find out what Vam# to add to Details
Yup! this one maybe a new Vam??? the 85-CC in know to have this one.but the 1885 picture is a 85-O. that what I been told by Pcgs. http://dmplvam.com/VAM/1885/
I prefer PCGS. I have sold most of my non PCGS coins and rarely buy anything but PCGS. I have a couple reasons for this: 1. Spent some time with a top collection of what I collect (Morgans). He has a few thousand PCGS coins. We talked about PCGS and grading companies for a while. It was enough to change how I collect. 2. I personally believe they are the best for preserving the value of the coin. 3. I believe in the company. I have met more of the PCGS higher ups than other companies just through the course of collecting and I really liked what I saw. I have not met many from the other companies. Perhaps if I did it would change my mind.
