Thanks to a fun thread posted in the Coin Chat forum by ExBingoAddict, I was inspired to ask the same of the Paper Money collectors... Uncle George leaves you some amount of cash. (For all those times he never paid you to rake leaves.) He demands you buy notes with the money. What would you buy if he gave you $250? $500?, or $1,000? Please restrict this to Paper Money selections only! NO coins!
I would search for the following notes with these amounts: $250: Series of 1899 - $1 Silver Certificate 'Black Eagle Note' [F-226 through F-236] $500: Series of 1886 - $1 Silver Certificate 'Martha Washington Note' [F-222 or F-223] $1k: Series of 1913 - $50 Gold Certificate, Bust of Pres. Grant [F-1198 through F-1200(a)]
$250 - $20 1902 SF National Banknote $500 - $2 Battleship (SF) $1000 - $1 1896 Educational (silver cert) or a 1902 local bank National Currency (if I could find one)
Hard to know what prices would bring, and whether I could find them, but sticking with the theme: $250: 5000F P-4c O. Bongo (pit mining) $500: 1000F P-2 Bokassa (the one with the Rhinoceros) $1000: 5000F P-7 Bokassa (field workers) Dave
$250: 1899 $1 Silver Certificate Black Eagle Note $500: 1886 $1 Silver Certificate Martha Washington Note $1k: 1934 $500 Federal Reserve Note
$250 : 1981 $1 J-D block in XF/AU $500 : 1981A $1 Dallas Star CH-CU $1,000 : 1985 $1 St Louis Star CH-CU or 2004A $50 New York Star in 67PPQ
$250: $5 1907 or earlier woodchopper in XF-ChCu $500: $10 1901 bison in F+ to VF $1,000: 1922 $20 Gold Certificate ChCu
250: $2 1899 silver cert. 500: $2 FRBN battleship maybe, if I could find a decent one for $500. otherwise.. let's say a 1914 $100 FRN. 1000: $2 1896 "educational" silver cert. Apparently I want the $2's. I actually am planning to buy a battleship (I don't mind which district) soon, though I might spend more than $500. Have to see what I can find.
$250 - Fr-1267 15 cent fractional with Bust of Columbia, Ch. Unc. $500 - Fr-624 through 638 - $20 National, 3rd charter period, from my hometown bank. Grade to be determined based on price.... $1000 - Fr-1084 through 1131 - $100 FRN. Grade based on price.
A quick update to my "wish list". I was fortunate enough to win at auction, (Lynn Knight) a 2004A $50 New York Star (GB*). I lowered my expectations and was able to find a 63PPQ for $400. Would I rather have the 67PPQ, yes.....but my budget won this particular battle. I'll post it here whwn it arrives.
wow lol we really are nuts arent we... i mean $400 on a $50 note. A current note at that.... try explaining this to non-collectors it will make your head hurt great pick up Steve... cant wait to see the note!
I agree about trying to explain to non-collectors how much we pay for ONE DOLLAR BILLS, I have some samples to show ya'll....... These are IDENTICAL serial numbers, IDENTICAL districts, AND, IDENTICAL grades.....and only paid $900 for the pair.
WOW Steve, those are great finds you got there of low serials in excellent shape. I htink the price is worth it for your collection. DGGARJON, my wife always looks at me weird when I try to tell her why spending over face for a note is well worth it!
