Did you notice that your coin has the R in SR cut backwards? Mistakes like this happen on individual dies (I credit it to being cut just before lunch break) and don't add to the cash value of coins like it would on a US coin. Your coin is workshop delta (4). Mine below is Alpha (1). Who knows what SR means here? I don't.
Had to look at it with my loupe and you are correct. Thats very cool. Gonna have to type that up for when I catalog my recent purchases this weekend. BTW, my fallen horseman is being mailed today & its actually different then you suggested. Was told its a bit better variety with shield on ground at about 5 o clock, the "clutching".
Nice coins, I like the Valerian Alexandrian Tetradrachm, very cool. The urbs roma coin is also very nice.... interesting about that backwards 'R'. As far as what the 'S R' stands for... I don't know, maybe 'Senatus Romanus' ? just a guess...
Failmezger's book on these gave Saeculum Romanum but that was as much of a guess as anything also. Part of the 'deal' with ancient coins is that there are things you will only know to a slight degree mixed in with things that are more certain. People who require absolute facts on everything usually find a different hobby.
Hm Saeculum Romanum .... it sounds good. Well that's how it goes with ancient coins... it makes things interesting though.
The commemoratives shown here are better ones. There are many scarce varieties of additional letters or symbols by the two stars above the wolf. The most desirable is a chi-ro between the stars. Both nice coins.
