What a lucky fellow I am. My youngest daughter gave me an 1836 4 Pence (Groat) for a surprise New Years gift. It's made my day, I'll tell you Stop and smell the roses... HNY B
Bone, Beautiful coin and a great gift.I wasn't aware that the term "groat" was still used after hammered coins were replaced with milled ones.I looked it up and you are correct. By the way,my photos are still not showing after the recent upgrade. Is there a secret or is it my domain or computer? Any ideas?
Bone, there are 2 dates of the Britannia Groat of King William IV - 1836 & 1837.These were the first British circulation Groats as opposed to Maundy Groats & English Groats. The 'Young Head' Groats of Queen Victoria are in a series from 1838 until 1855.There was a 'Jubilee Head' Britannia Groat dated 1888.This was used only in British Guiana,& is extremely difficult to find.I waited nearly 10 years before a dealer sold me a cleaned example, which was good enough to fill a space in my collection.
