Wasn't sure if i should post these here or in the whats it worth forum. Figured it would fit better here but the mods can move it if you wish.

I don't do much with paper money but inherited these. I don't have a clue how to grade them or what they're worth.

First is a $20 gold certificate.

The vertical folds in it have tears coming part way in from the edges.

Also have a 10 cent note.

Thanks for any info you can give me.

Whoa ! The Gold Certificate looks real interesting. I am going to follow this as the currency guys check in. Am real curious about the 10c note. I suspect the Gold note has some value ? I wonder if you can redeem it for a $20 gold piece ?

No you cannot, not in the traditional sense of gold on demand from a bank. The US is not on a gold standard.

But perhaps you can, if you can find some unsuspecting rube willing to do so with an old gold $20 piece.

The $20 Gold Certificate is in pretty rough shape, no better than a VG-8 which has a 'guide book value' of about $250. To me that is SUPER HIGH. In this grade I'd say you are more in the $70 range, if that! due to the abuse this has seen.

This note is Friedberg catalog number F-1187, Series of 1922. Signatures are Speelman and White with a Gold seal.

The 10¢ note is Fifth Issue, Fractional Currency with Red Seal, Long Thin key (the key image in the Treasury shield)

Friedberg catalog number F-1265. This one is maybe a VG-8 with 'guide book value' of about $20. I don't know these well enough to cite my own value on this note.

Have a look at Heritage Auctions Curency Auction Archives. You can set up a free account to explore recent prices paid and see images to compare for grade and so on.

Check out PMG's paper grades to see where you notes might fit in their grading standards -and- the PCGS paper grading scale.

With the missing corner I think that 10 cent note would be relegated to a grade of "good". You could probably still get $15-$17 for it.

nice notes, even in those grades!

with the condition of the $20 as you noted, i wouldnt remove the note from the sleeve if you can at all help it. Any attempt could tear the note. Doing that would render the note worth much less then its current state.

Thanks for all the info. And thanks for the links krispy.

I was kinda hopping the $20 would be worth a little more but i'm not planning on selling them anytime soon so it dosn't matter that much.
I have a few other notes I got with them but they're not as interesting. I may post them another time.

I actually picked the sleeves for them up myself. When I got them they were in an old envelope.

The fractional is bumped into the VG grade due to the condition of the note and the clipped corner. In its condition, it is worth approximately $12-$15. I have the same note in XF condition and I only paid $35 for it. As for the gold certificate, it is also in VG condition and book price is $200-$250, although I agree with krispy stating you probably won't get that much for it... Hope this helps

The $20 gold certificate is in super rough shape a good conversation piece but that,s about
It, not what i would call a collectors note, you could always use it as a filler.

The 10 cent fractional is really common in uncirculated condition for about $40-$50 dollars max
With the missing corner and overall condition you would be looking at $10-$13
