Can anyone help me, I was at the local flea market and I saw a world coin- sorry for the fuzzy description- Its has palm trees and has some arabic writing on it. it looks to be nickel. Where is it from, is it worth anything, and if someone knows what im talking about, could you post a pic so i can confirm it.

    Thanks:)

At the very least, when you ask for help IDing a coin without a picture, give its size and a full description of the designs on both sides. Even experts on the country you are asking about need that much information.

And BTW - how dare you define a coin as "weird" just because it doesn't have English language legends? Out of about 6.7 billion people in the world, only about 1 billion reside in countries where English is the predominant language. On that basis, perhaps the "weird" coins are those with English legends!

[IMG]I think you're talking about an coin from Israel , it could be any of the pruta pieces from 1954 or this 10 agorot piece .

I thought of those, but he said the writing was Arabic, not Hebrew. (Of course, he may not know the difference.)

@rollbama13 : It could always be from Iraq [IMG]
and now that i think about it the odd shape could be categorized as weird

Both are "weird". (duck) Actually this 10 agorot coin has both Hebrew and Arabic. Unfortunately there are so many coins with palm trees ...

Even though I don`t collect foreign currency, I do like the bigger 12 sided coin from Iraq. What years were those made?

It's the 10 fils coin , mintage from 1967 to 1982 had the palm trees and 12 corners.

Ok first off, thank you very much Weryon, the ones that you said that were Iraq were the ones I was talking about.

    Second-

How dare I? I apologize I'm not familiar with world currency as you are. Forgive my ignorance. This was not an attempt to put down anyone.

When I have came in contact with something that Im unfamiliar with, I call it strange or unusual. NOTHING DEGRADING
What do you think Darwin said when discovered all new types of animals or when Magllen explored new lands?
Buddy, Im a rookie at this, it was a rookie mistake. I have just gotten into coins within the last year, so my terminology is not as sharp as yours.
What’s this world coming to when a word taken wrong causes someone to get thier shorts twisted.
You had to start reading when you were little. Did your teacher put you down b/c you couldn’t pronounce a word?
Im trying to learn, not offend. If I call something weird its because Im UNFAMILIAR with it, not that I think less of another language.
As a matter of fact, how dare you accuse me biased or partial to unilingual (English) countries!
I asked for help to identify a coin, Weryon was able to narrow it down, and he showed me the one I was talking about.
You on the other hand, put people down for not being familiar with a country's coin?
Im sure you have screwed up before b/c you didn’t know much about something.
    Grow up.

Please forgive my ridiculous assumption that a word was used with it's dictionary meaning:
I will make no further comments in this thread.

Yeah... it's common for us Americans to use the word 'weird' or 'strange' when speaking about something we find different than what we are used to. I remember the first time I was in Southeast Asia, my fiance reminded me never to say that anything was 'weird' or 'strange' in public, it can be quite an offensive word to some. Even though we often use such words with no offense or disrespect intended whatsoever, it can still be offensive or taken to be disrespectful by some.

I agree 100% and I apologize for my terminology. Im new at this so youll have to forgive me. But I dont think someone should be doged for a misunderstanding.:rollling:
What my point is he could have said it in a friendly or in a genial way, but he come off as being hostile, and there was no need for it.
You have to take things with a grain of salt and not a mound............ Again and probably not the last time, Im sorry I offended you or anyone...
Just next time, dont bite thier heads off or have an atittude twords someone that dosent know....

Now I wont make the same mistake twice..... :foot-mouth:
