I got these two Italian 500 Lire coins at a coin show yesterday. They were purchased from two different dealers & sold for slightly over their bullion value. One is dated 1958 and the other is dated 1966. They are both 83.5% silver & the date may be found on the edge of the coin. Italy made these in both proof & uncirculated from 1958 to 2000. Do you have a coin with a Columbus theme? Please post a picture.
Not really my image, but I have this Columbus coin. This is a €2 piece that San Marino issued in 2006 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of his birth. The other side is the common reverse that the €2 coins had at that time. Christian
I have heard many times that we really don't know what Columbus looked like because there were no contemporary portraits or busts made of him.
Not that many will believe me, but I happen to be a distant relative of Columbus. Many years ago, my grandfather was in a story in our city's newspaper explaining it; how I wish I could search the local archives.
The date is on the edge.... This is the nicest example of the 500 Lire in my collection. I have posted it here before
1892 commemorative half - one of the coolest examples I've ever owned 1992 commemorative half 1992 commemorative dollar - always liked this reverse with the half space shuttle have columbus ship
@ Collect 89 ~ Amazing 500 Lire piece, lovely colors. @ illini420 ~ Great piece a usual, and as I said about Collect's piece, the color on this coin is fantastic. I don't have a depicting of Columbus but I always enjoy this statue of Columbus that stands in Columbus circle in NYC
This is the Columbus Column in Barcelona. Link only; but the column will also be on a new €5 collector coin from the "Provinces" series. See the attached image. Christian
That is my favorite reverse of ANY coin ever. I have yet to find one (other than ebay, from which I can't buy b/c I don't have paypal).
They should be relatively easy to find. I see them at local coin shows pretty often, still in the original government packaging as the 2-coin set with the dollar coin and the half dollar. They go for between $25-$35 I think. Might want to call local coin shops too as they usually have tons of modern commemoratives or can get them quickly.
There's no shows or coin shops around here. There's one (shop) over in Alto (20 miles or so) but I've heard he's exremely pricey. Idk if any shows ever come closer than Dalton (two hour plus drive).
That is a neat 5 Euro coin. I have added it to my want list today. As it happens, Barcelona is my favorite city to visit in the world. There are many nice places & people in the world but Barcelona is my favorite city to visit.
