Should i Bid On THIS

Really want this for my collection...is $45,000.00 too much for this??

Yes, $45,000 is likely too much to bid for it. And if you had to ask, you shouldn't bid on it.

Though not CAC certified, the last two PCGS AU53 examples sold by Heritage (this year) brought $38,812 and $33,350. I'm guessing that your $45,000 figure is taken from the PCGS Price Guide price, which is apparently too high.

 

i have other gold pieces at his level, but not this one....looks nicer than previous examples i have seen. guess you are some sort of wise guy with your "and if your had to ask" comment. in the future please do not respond to my threads as i was not looking for a nasty response. thanks

 

You might not like what I wrote, and you are, of course, free to disagree with me, but I wasn't being a "wiseguy".

I gave an honest reply to your question, and included some recent sale information, as well as commentary on your $45,000 figure. If you would consider bidding that amount on a coin on a sight-unseen basis, that only further reinforces my opinion. But suit yourself.

Now, after complaining that I responded, you proceed to ask me a question, which would lead to yet another response from me - please make up your mind. And by the way, THAT is an example of being a "wiseguy".

 

Mark, your opinions are highly respected by many, and I think you are spot on here, with your entire answer.
If one were actually bidding on this offering, I would suggest they would not need to ask " should I " in a coin forum arena. Seriously, as if an opinion here would convince anyone to bid or not to bid in this offering. Absurd at best.

i just find it odd that when someone asks about bidding on a $200.00 or $300.00 coin that person is responded to with positive info...just because i have the where with all to bid on expensive coinage i get a wise crack response....

 

Well its common sense to research a coin whether it be $100 or $100,000. He took what, 5 seconds to check old auctions to see what the coin had previously sold for and your asking if you should bid 45k? Just remember your the "NEW" guy not Mark, and who cares if you collected for 50 years. You asked for an opinion and an opinion you received.

 

been collecting for 35 years myself, and research all major purchases extensively. i did know the past auction records...just wanted an opinion on this coin....sometimes one must pay a premium for quality, which this coin falls into that catagory (my opinion)...anyway, will never ask an opinion again!

 

Mark wasn't giving you a wise crack response, you just took it that way. $45,000, is a serious amount of money, so a person potentially bidding that much should really do their homework on the coin, and by your post it was pretty clear you hadn't done your homework. For instance, using the PCGS Price guide as a bidding estimate is not a very good idea, and is going to lead to paying too much 99% of the time.

 

Often, one can't obtain a meaningful opinion on a coin (for purposes of whether it deserves a significant premium) based on images. I am all for paying deserved premiums for quality. But not without an in-hand inspection of the coin, or at the very least, from feedback from a trusted, expert representative who has viewed it.

For what it's worth, under similar circumstances, I would have given the same type of reply to that type of question about a lower value coin, as well.

You will be doing yourself a large disservice by not asking for any opinions in the future, merely because you didn't like some of the replies you received here.

You should take some of that $45k and get some spelling and grammar lessons. I have trouble taking you seriously when you type worse than my 13 year old sister, no exaggeration.

rawbuyer, I see this same stuff happen with cheaper coins too. Shoot, people post about their coins and they are worth face and people say stuff like Mark did all the time.
He meant nothing but the typical do some research.

I agree that everyone that looks to collect coins should do some studying up before spending money on them. (That goes for pretty much anything not just coins).

If you are looking to buy coins and don't want to do much homework you might want to PM Mark actually or someone else that is good with them as they could help you find what you want, make sure it's a good items and probably save you a lot of cash too boot.

Either way you can always post here and you'll get advice but sometimes it might be not as friendly as advise that is paid for.
