A week or so before christmas, I had told my grandma that I had started collecting coins. And guess what she gave me: coins! She use to run an antique store, but she's retired now and has 40 years worth of flea market visits in her house. Ever since I can remember she always gives presents that have come from who knows where in her house. (I don't mind) But anyways, she gave me 3 coins. One of them was an english two shillings, 1948, and another is italian, 1989. It says L. 500 on it, and I think has braile on the top on the obverse side. The third one, no one knows what it is, but we can tell it's from the middle east or somewhere in that region. Anyone know atleast which country?
Sorry but that looks like it's from Iran, definately not from India. Indian texts are too different compared to a typical arabic text. Here is something in reference that looks similar to that coin: http://www.worldcoingallery.com/countries/Iran.html Link from worldcoingallery.com
Iranian 500 Dinars KM#1102 (1927-1929) .900 silver, if it turns out to be 1927 it could be worth about $40 dollars or so.
What's the size We can't properly attribute the coin without knowing the answer, because the identical obverse design of a 3/4 bust of Reza Shah and his accession date SH1304 (1925); with the Iranian scimitar-wielding lion encircled by a wreath on the reverse, was used - in .900 silver - for 500 Dinars (KM#1102), ~18mm, 2.3025g 1,000 Dinars (KM#1103), ~25mm, 4.6050g 2,000 Dinars (KM#1104), ~24mm but much thicker than the others, 9.2100g 5,000 Dinars (KM#1106), ~34mm, 23.0251g . 500 Lire - and it does.
Orps, prior to 1935,Iran was known to the world as Persia.Iran & Afghanistan use a slightly different version of the Islamic calendar. The Iranian & Afghan calendar is a solar one as opposed to the normal lunar Islamic calendar, which is why the catalogue listings use the letters 'SH' to mean 'Solar Hegira' as opposed to 'AH',which means 'Anno Hegeriae' (Hegira Year). Well, I can't read it, so I don't know the year. Lol. It's exactly the same size as the picture, my scanner works that way. Well, it's just a few mm bigger. Lol, I thought so. I can post a pic of that one too if you want, it's in pretty good shape. Thanks for the informations guys, at least I have the region down and the possible year. It was no problem for me to figure out the other two because the one is in english and the other said Italiana, but I couldn't read the third because it's in a different language and alphabet.
Don't forget, we don't all have the same size monitors. I have a 15" on my desktop, I know my sister has a humongous 19", and the screen on my lapatop is only 11.5". The displayed size of the coin on those three monitors will vary quite significantly. Frankly, I still don't know if your coin is 500, 1,000, 2000 or 5,000 Dinars. It just takes a few keystrokes to give the diameter of a coin you want information about, so why not do it guys?
Congratulations young man - you have a 5,000 Dinar coin which catalogs in the range $20-100 for F through XF. In those grades the others list for $4.50-85 (500); $20-60 (1K) and $20-50 (2K). I've downloaded your pictures to enlarge and lighten them; and perhaps I'ill eventually figure out how to determine the actual date of issuance, which could be SH1306, 1307 or 1308. BTW as posted, your coin has a 45mm (4.5cm) diameter on my screen.
Yaaaay! Sorry, I know that dif. moniters show different sizes, I wasn't really thinking! (It's cold up here, I think my brain froze...I've been using that exscus all december long...) Thanks alot guys!
Okay! The accession date is to the left of the Shah's hat. The coin issue date (SH1308 - 1929) is located at the bottom center of the coin, below the bust. The file attachment process is one of those not things which are not yet working under the software upgrade, so I can't post my edited picture of the obverse, enlarged and lightened to clearly show and mark the dates until Peter gets things squared away. 1929 was the final year of issue, with only 584,000 minted, compared to mintages of 3-4.7 million in earlier years. 2006 Krause values are $40 F, $75 VF, $100 XF and $150 Unc. It's very difficult to grade without a higher resolution picture, especially since a scan doesn't show the luster, if any, but my guess is that it's someplace in the VF to AU range. As a grandparent, I sincerely hope that I don't have to remind you to say "Thank you Grandma."
Here's the revised picture. The red circle is around the accession date and the blue circle is around the issue date.:smile
It must be remembered that the Persian numerals are virtually the same as the true Arabic numerals, except for the number 4. Aidan.
Yeah well,my sister and bro-in-law just got back from Greece and since they knew I collect coins, included these on my Christmas card.Good thing I already have a complete BU set of Euro coins.Think I'll leave the Scotch Tape® on.
Good idea Mikjo0 __ Even after this thread, the coin is still sitting on my desk. I'll have to get it in something and label it. Thanks again.
