Hi, swish. Do you know about the Sheldon Scale? It would be interesting to see what you grade it as. It's in much better condition than most that I see. It's a Meiji-era 50 sen. .900/1000 silver. Meiji 35 is 1902.
i'm not sure how much of a grade deduction the spots on the reverse would cause. that was why i was asking as to a grade. i personally call it vf.
Not sure what caused those spots. I agree with you on vf but I'm no expert. My main collecting/trading interest is antique watches but I've collected a few hundred Taisho and earlier Showa coins and I need to become more acquainted with grading. Maybe an expert will add something here. Let me know if your collecting interest extends beyond this coin.
Ignoring the spots, it's definitely AU - no signs of wear on the obverse, and slight rub on the leaves of the wreath on the reverse, which are always the first place to show wear on that design. Personally, I give it a net XF, but VF is not an unreasonable downgrade.
Just out of curiousity how much did you pay for this coin? I collect Japanese coins and I do not have this one in my collection.
i need to get more acquianted with grading japanese coins. i have quite a few showa coins, but haven't really done much with them until recently.
i paid $8. the dealer knew it was silver, but since it wasn't an american coin, he put it in his "junk bin".
Nice colour on your coin swish, I recently got a Meiji era 50 sen (1903) and yours has a nicer look about it to be sure. Excellent price for that opportunity, definitely a great deal to take advantage of.
