I really love this idea! In fact I have a small collection of $2 Red Seal notes and some other random $2 bills. I will be totally honest though, I have no idea what I should have been looking for really and now I have some insight thanks to you! I think I will be purchasing or at least looking for one of the bills you recommended regardless of whether or not it finishes in the Top 3.

    Thanks!

Great! Glad to help. Good luck in your search.

Also check out the Paper Money forums on CT when you have time. There are a lot of interesting currency pieces shared there with many knowledgeable folks to help out with questions.

I would go with a mercury dime from 1916-31 that`s an EF-40. Many of the common dates are around the $10 range. But I like the wartime nickels too.

Along with my earlier stated 1943 steelie,
I will third the BU war nickel. I love those particular Jeffersons (the rest of the series doesn't interest me much).

So far it seems like Steelies and Silver War Nickels are leading the way but keep those suggestions and votes coming!

Thanks again to everyone who has participated!

Washington Quarters, Merc Dimes and Paper on top of all the other great suggestions. Keep them coming!

I think I am finding a positive side effect to this experiment to be how important general numismatic knowledge is. Although people may focus on a few coins (like myself) the people that benefit the most are the ones who can identify and not miss out on a golden opportunity by having a vast array of both general and in depth knowledge.

I feel like this experiment has started to nudge me in the right direction by broadening my horizons and knowledge in Numismatics as a whole! :)

    Thanks!

Another Merc Dime vote....and btw that 1988 RDV-006 has a different G in the initials right? How much do they go for out of curiosity? I am assuming for way more than $7....

Please select a nice coin & let me know when to send my address by PM :)  You gave me three countries so I have three times the chance to win :) .

    Philippines (My personal favorite here)
There is a large, beautiful, & historic 75% silver coin from The Philippines under US Administration. You can find the 50 Centavos in BU dated either 1944 or 1945. This is a silver coin right in between the size of a US quarter & half dollar. Of course, you get to decide if the design is attractive enough for your taste. I think you will like it very much.

    Spain (My personal 2nd choice)
There is a medium sized coin minted just before 1900 which depicts Alfonso XIII. This nice king was depicted at various states of his childhood because his dad (the previous king) died before he was born. Alfonso XIII was proclaimed king the instant he was born. His mother was regent until he was a teen but he was an instant king at birth. He is quite famous due to his mother placing his image on coins to introduce him to the world. Find either a ½ or 1 Peseta in VF. Yes, he is depicted as a little boy on these coins dated 1889 to 1900.

Prussia (OK I like this one too but if you start collecting German states then you could be at it for many lifetimes).
My third choice is the larger silver 2 mark denomination from Prussia. The appearance of these coins is much like a US commemorative half dollar of the 1930s. If you are lucky, you might find & negotiate this large silver coin in VF for $7 to $10. The coins I am referring to are dated between 1900 and 1918 made during the realm of Wilhelm II. There are four good 2 mark designs from which to choose.

I'll check if I have any photos of these coins on my other computer.

I love #1 in fact I have 10 Centavos from 1944 minted in Denver, love it. I think the 50 Centavos which is bigger will better show off the details of that pretty silver coin! Here is another instance where regardless of where these coins finish in the vote I will probably try to find them and buy them anyway! Thanks!

Bicentennial Ike in Prf-65, nice call thanks for getting involved and for the suggestion! Everyone, please keep on making any recommendations you may have or vote for any currently nominated coins so I can get down to final 3 before this Saturday!

Thanks again for the help everyone! :)

I suggest 1926 S in F12+. If we have to vote for one, though, I really think the 1909 VDB in any condition AG3/G4+ would be a good challenge, since most dealers probably have VDB's for sale, so you should have plenty of opportunities to try to haggle them down to $7.00.

edit: So my vote is for whoever said 1909 VDB

The Philippines under US Administration 1944 & 1945 50 Centavos

I believe that the 50 Centavos dated 1944 & 1945 are S mint coins. I've got one but no photo to share. Here is a photo depicting the 1958 but you should look for a silver 1944 or 1945 in BU for $7. The reverse of the 1944 & 45 is much different than the 1958 depicted here.

The boy king Alfonso XIII of Spain

These photos depict Alfonso when he was a child king. Look for the 1 Peseta or 1/2 Peseta (50c) in VF for $7 - $10.
I think these Spain coins sell quickly so it may be a challenge to find one in VF25.

2-Mark silver coins from Wilhelm II reign

For the Prussia 2-Mark, I only have this one example but you can look for any 2-mark minted between 1900 & 1918. If you can find it, a VF should be in the range of $7 to $10.

Another vote for a War Nickel 43-D....nice choice!

I think we are past the nominating stage now, so start getting your votes in so you will be eligible for the drawing at the end. As you all vote for a nominated coin if you all want to list a specific coin like the 43-d or whatever it would be appreciated as well unless you want me to look for any year in a certain range maybe.

Voting will end at Midnight tonight PST. So any votes for coins that come in after that time frame will not be counted towards me picking the Top 3 and will not be included in the drawing which I will hold on Sunday.

Thanks for playing and keep on voting!
