I have a half ounce 1996 American Gold Eagle MS 69 ICG and was wondering if it could be sold for more than spot. 1996 is the second lowest mintage of the half ounce American eagle, but the coin was rated by ICG.

Would the ICG rating negatively affect any premium the coin would normally sell for? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

All I can say is good luck. I picked some up about 4 years ago hoping to do that same thing since I had previously done that with the 1990 and 1991 half ouncers (I sold a 1990 for about 2x spot, and 1991 for about 4x spot). Nobody wanted them for more than spot. I eventually sold them when gold was at about $750 or so. Wish I still had them though. I think it is simply the hype put on the 1991, 1990, and 1989 coins that nobody realizes that the 1996 is actually lower than the 1990 and 1989. Either that or the roman numerals might make them more desirable to collectors. Anyway, good luck.

Thank you. I bought it when gold was lower for a little over spot. I guess the guy who owned the coin shop knew what he was doing. When I saw the lower mintage I thought I had gotten a good deal. I can always just sell it for a profit at spot.
