This penny I found last year in one of the play grounds/Tot Lots I search at. I first thought it was play money, but it's not plastic. It is the same size as the penny but minus the rim, it weighs 1.6grams. I looked last night on-line and found a few of them, this one does not look like it was in acid it actually has the same texture as a regular penny and it's not the size of a dime. I wonder if it's an error? I also thought that some one was doing a copper rubbing, it does have the image of the memorial on the reverse side. I cleaned the dark penny had dirt/soil on it, also wanted to show the same year.
Hi ikandiggit, I'm not familiar with that cleaning technique, but wouldn't the details have be eatten away from the coke? I've heard of people cleaning there coins with coca cola. ~Audiz~
Hi ikandiggit, that is an interesting post, I wouldn't of thought that acid could react that way with out the pitting. I want to Thank-you for solving the mystery for me. This penny does make for an oddity in my collection. ~Audiz~
I have some acid soaked cents that weigh less than 1.5 grams. The detail is very good and there's no pitting. I was reluctant to believe they could have been reduced in that manner. But I now think they were intended to be the size of a dime and soaked too long. The experts looked at the pics I submitted and concurred that it was acid bathed and not a wrong planchet. However I never sent one in to CONECA for an in hand inspection. If you really feel it's an error, the fee is only $5 plus shipping. That way you would know for sure.
