I was searching through a roll of old wheat pennies today when I stumbled across a 1942-d. Right away I knew something looked different about the coin, and in comparison next to another 42-d, the first one definitely has a Boldly doubled mintmark. The only problem is I cant find any information about this mint, and it seems the 1943 steelie is the only one I can find info about. so my question is, has anybody ever heard of a 1942-D with a boldly doubled mintmark? thanks.
During this era of coin production, the Mint Marks were added to the dies by hand, via letter punch and hammer. What you have is probably considered a RPM or Re-punched Mint Mark, meaning the letter die did not align properly with the original hammered in letter and now it looks doubled. The resource linked above is about the best you will find on the net. Happy Collecting
You need the "Cherrypickers' Guide to Rear Die Varieties", by Bill Fivza and J. T. Stanton.Look at page 109. Other book is Breen's on US and Colonial Coins on page 231, doesn't list one. Good luck. -O)
searcher Cherry picker's only lists a small amount of the RPM's. The site I listed above lists over 1300. Richard
