I have posted a thread on 10/01/10 refering to a coin I think is a gold escudo. I'm not sure of the denomination. I think maybe a 2 escudo. It's to large to be a one, and it could be a 4. What puzzles me is the bust strike. The bust is that of Ferdinand VI, but the name to the left of the bust says, Carlos III. It was minted in Columbia. Ferdinand was long in the ground when this coin was minted. The date on the coin is 1770. I have been unable to learn anything about this coin. I have posted a photo that's not very clear, but the best I can do with my camera. Is there anyone out there who can put me to a link that would help me solve this little mystery; I would be forever thankful.
    Thank you

Here's a couple of sites that may help. I was looking at purchasing an Escudo a while back for my neck chain.

This link is straight to Escudos.

Treashunt, what makes you think that it's 99.9% fake?

Here is a prime example of a 1781-SF Popayan 1 Escudo. Notice the 1 to the left of the shield on the reverse. If your coin has a 2, 4 or 8 instead of a 1 then that's what it is. A 2 Escudo is also known as a Doubloon.

Look at your picture, by the way

    that is a beautiful coin.

The clothing is very different, in fact the little that I can see of his coin the figure looks like a girl.

And just compare the sizes of the nose.

    Hey Joe,
    No pun intended

I consulted my Standard Catalog of World Gold Coins, 6th Ed. and found this, see below. It appears that your Charles III coin is a 2 Escudo (Doubloon). It would be nice to see better pictures. Be aware that there are a lot of these coins out there that are not real and only souvenirs. You would need a pro to look at it but, this gives you the weight of the coin so that's a start. Good Luck

Treashunt, it's a wig, that was proper attire back in 1770.

Silver59, thank you so much for the info. I'm going to give sedwick down in Florida a call as they deal in Spanish coins. I'll scan them a copy once I get myself a scanner and see if they can price it. I would say my coin is a VF. How old is your catalog? Is it up to date with current gold prices? Again, thank you from the great thumbnails.

Thanks to all who took a look at this coin for me. I have never had a better response from any other coin sites.

The catalog is 2009, spot prices at the time of printing were, $950-$1000 for gold valuation. What did you pay for it may I ask?

Dan Sedwick is the ultimate expert. He would probably write you a certificate of authenticity for a small fee. That or getting it graded by TPG would certainly ease any buyers mind when and if you decide to sell.

I paid 350.00 back in 2003; I think. I can't remember what gold prices were than, but I feel I made a great profit on it. You may not believe this, but I have been looking for answers since the day I bought it. Every site or place I looked for answers have been, "I don't know," or no return reply at all. I don't know were to find you, but if I ever run into you, the drinks are on me.

    Hey Cash,
Thank you for your advice to get in touch with Mr.Sedwick. I sent Augi the crappy photo and he told me to scan it and send it back. I like the idea of the certificate of authenticity. It may as you say ease a buyers mind; and push up the price.
    Thank You
