I was asked by a friend to liquidate her father’s coin shop he passed away and they do not want the coins. Currently we are in the process of sorting the coins. So far we have found the following.

1.) Several of the 1776 -1976 3 coin proof sets – Still in the packaging from the mint.
2.) Several of the Blue pack Eisenhower dollars - Looks brand new.
3.) Several of the Brown packs Eisenhower dollars - Looks brand new.
4.) Bags of wheat Penny’s all dates. (loose)
5.) Bank bags filled of Rolls of wheat Penny’s, Mercury Dimes, and Buffalo Nickels, Lincoln Memorial cents, plus War Nickels.
6.) Rolls of Franklin Halves many dates – (They look brand new)
7.) Rolls of Walking Liberty dollars.
8.) Several Loose Kennedy Halve dollars, Peace Dollars, Morgan Dollars, Eisenhower dollars.
9.) Several boxes of World Coins. Mostly Mexican Paso.

I would like to get them as much money as I can for this collection. Has anyone here ever had to do this? Would we make out better creating sets or selling the coins loose? Any other suggestion would be of great help since I have never done this before.

    Thanks

This might sound awful but I'd sure as heck would be checking for key dates or coins worth more then melt.

From what I can determine, there isn't much money in the lot of coins you describe, but I don't have the coins in hand either . If your not in a hurry to relieve yourself of these, you would probably do better either offering them for sale in the classified section here on CT, or EBAY, or the Dealer route which you will be working on melt. Before deciding what to do, know exactly what you have. Perhaps someone from your local Coin Club might assist you in determining values.

Find one of the major book stores and buy yourself a couple of books to help educate you on what your looking to sell. I would also suggest rolling the cents and dimes into decade rolls for selling and organization(10,s 20,s 30s ect.). The half dollars and dollar coins need to be carefully examined for years, mints and grades to get the best price you can for them. Once your sure of what you have you can break down some of the more common damaged halves and dollars and sell them for there silver value.
Step one tho is to learn the key dates and know if you have them before selling anything.

    Depends

Do you look at this task as an opportunity or a bother?

If it is a bother you may find it expedient to let other eyes upon the stash.

If it is an opportunity, I'm sure you can optimize her return but only after investing hours of your own time to get what can be gotten from whatever is in the collection.

I have had the opportunity to do this for friends and coworkers several times.. It can be hard.. If the person does not care and just wants a cash value for items.. I give Melt and Bulk prices.. Sometimes they are very happy with this.. but your going to feel bad if you find something of value.. I have and ended up going back and kicking down more $$ .. I am honest.. Others I have had tell me they don't care what I find.. its mine do whatever.. That is how I started this whole thing.. my 1909SVDB came to me that way.. You can get some nice items.. if you take the time and research, research ,research.. if your not into coins at all then sell them to someone who loves them.. your on the right site and I would hope that cointalk members will be honest as I know them to be.. its really up to you on what your looking for.. quick $$ or a lifetime obsession... Fast sales well Described Ebay Auctions will sell if done right for a bit more then normal.. sometimes.

I am looking at it as an Opportunity and an educational experience at the sametime. I want to get her as much out of the collection as possible. I am willing to spend as many hours as I need to on his.

The coins you listed are very common (unless there are key dates mixed in) and do not sound like the inventory of most coin shops.

Agreed. It sounds more like one of those Ebay "Mega Deals".

I totally agree, and that was my gut check after originally reading the inventory.
For a coin shop, I wonder what happened to all the certified, and loose songle coins

    Best option is to contact

    Camino CoIn company
    www.caminocompany.com
give them a call and ask for Parker.
He buys lots like these all the time over the phone.
Just the other day while I was cashing in a bunch of coins, a lady called in and sold them two slabbed quarters for 85k!!

Has your friend considered becoming a coin collector herself?

I was thinking exactly the same thing. However, the OP did say they were still in the process of sorting through the inventory.

If the stuff he had was easily sold it would have been sold already. Yeah, you can probably find a few folks around here who will buy an item or two, but most of the stuff you're gonna be stuck with.

So your best bet is to just contact a trusted dealer and let him make you an offer on the entire package. Be advised you will have to ship it all to him first before he will even make you an offer. But that truly is the best way. Otherwise it's not hours you will spend doing this, but months and months. And what it will cost for shipping, packaging, insurance, and your time involved in selling the items piecemeal will end up being about the same as what the dealer offers you anyway.
