Im currently assembling a set of NGC MS67*'s. My goal is not to achieve the highest ranking in registry, rather I am pursuing the most eye appealing set. I found a hard date in MS67* that has remarkable color on the obverse. This year rarely comes in high grade with color because the mint sets from this year are in plastic. The reverse however is extremely nicked up and even has what I would consider gouges. My question to the coin talk community is.......... Are the nicks/gouges on the reverse extremely distracting to you? I have always been under the understanding that the coin can only grade as high as the lowest side. For example, a quarter with a MS67 reverse and MS65 Obverse should be graded as a MS65. I might be wrong. I would just like to hear some feedback because I am not sure if I will see another MS67* with this type of color come again, and it might not be in the best of my interest to be extremely picky with this date. ll of your opinions are greatly appreciated!
    thanks

Your thinking regarding grading is correct. And I agree that reverse is definitely not worthy of a 67. I'd be hard pressed to say it was worthy of a 65.

I would like it, if the strike was better. If the bands were full, would even be better. But the grading would be as "GDJMSP". :)-O) But a nice coin otherwise.

I think the pshcology of the collection is entirely up you how you feel. Do you want to complete the set right away, then upgrade ? Or would you rather take more time and shop for only the very high quality coins ?

I cannot understand how an coin can be cross graded ? I mean one side can be whatever, but the coin is only as good as it's worst side. I mean how else can it be, and be correct ?

I know I am still learning, but anything esle just doesn't make sense. I would never pay over the lowest side grade for any coin.

Sounds like you already have doubts - so I think you already know the answer. If you are not sure then skip it and keep waiting.

I'd say the reverse is 65.
    What year is it?
