i have an 1863 indian head that looks to be stamped on an small flying eagle blank.both looks the same color, same size and on my scales they both are 6.5 grams.my scales could be off.they should be 4.67. so could it be the same blanks
Interesting Interesting and a great start of documentation. I'm off to look up some stuff. ThanX for input.:thumb:
indian head cents from 1859 to 1864 (part of the year) were made of the same composition as flying eagle cents... 88% copper, 12% nickel. they also weigh the same (4.67 grams). in the 2nd half (or close to it) of 1864, they switched composition to 95% copper, 5% tin and zinc, and lowered the weight to 3.11 grams. your 1863 is normal.
