Looking for a 49 S Dime for my 7070. What are your thoughts on this one? Something just doesn't seem right, but it looks good. Has it been cleaned as I suspect? Thanks in advance for your help. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270640916435&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
It hasn't been cleaned, but dipped. Dipping is market acceptable and gives old coins a new look. You can find out what dipping does by simply typing it into the search bar.
I don't like it. The coin has virtually no luster left. There are plenty of nice examples out there and the premiums on Roosevelts in general are not that big.. Better to find one of them than settle for this sub-par example.
Dipping like that might not be acceptable. I don't know enough about Roosevelt dimes though to be definitive. Ruben
Thank you all so much - I am going to be patient and find one that I really like. This one at first pass caught my eye but something made me nervous and am glad we have this board where we can get the expert opinion from everyone. Thanks!
glad to help! I collect modern stuff and the one thing that seperates the good stuff from the so-so stuff is luster. I don't mean that the coin is shiny, per se, I mean that (even on coins like a 1949-S) that the coin should look like it just came from a fresh roll. I mean screaming luster should just jump out at you on a coin of this vintage. They are a lot more common than you think. Be vigilant and keep looking because they are out there if you look. There are a TON of coins with sub-standard luster just like the one in the ebay auction and they never really command much of a premium. Worse yet, when it's time to sell, they are much harder to get any kind of a price for. Just my opinion
