Hello, my friend just gave me a 1921-s Morgan Silver dollar that he had in his collection. I forgot to ask what it was worth though..

It's graded ms 66 by nasc. Any ideas what it may be worth?

Looks to be 1300-1450 however nasc as far as I know is not a top grading company. Can you please post a picture.

Chances are it's not even close to MS66, there is a 1921-d NASC morgan for sale, it's selling for less than 7%of the price of NGC or PCGS MS66 price.

Are you talking about the one pictured, it's not ms66 or mine? I'm just confused on why the price would be so low on the one pictured, but Richarrb said it could go for 1300-1400.

The coin in the auction appears to be way overgraded and possibly cleaned. just because someone puts a coin in a plastic holder and slaps a grade on it does not make that grade accurate. If you are interested in graded mint state coins you should stick with either PCGS, NGC, and even ICG. At least until you can determine if they are graded accurately. there are a lot of self slabbers and overgraders on ebay. You should get some books on grading like "the official ANA grading standards"or" pcgs guide to coin grading and counterfiet detection" before you do your wallet some serious damage.

Let me try and clarify somethings. With in certain grades there are estimates for price. These grades can be questionable at times. Most people use grey sheets, archive prices, or a red book, there are many more resources for prices. Now with grading there are companies that are more popular than others and most try to use the same standards. The company who graded that coin could over grade it or under graded it. I gave you the avg price of what a ms 66 1921 s Morgan
COULD potentially go for. That does not mean it will sale for that price. There are more factors that can and do effect a coins price. Others will add to this and help clarify th things I missed

as far as whether or not yours is graded properly you would need to post pictures of the front and back of the coin and ask for opinions. unfortunately more than likely if it is also graded by nasc it will be overgraded as well. but if it was given to you and it is a genuine morgan dollar its worth minimum 17.00 which is what silver melt is on that coin.

Most people will agree that if the slab is not from NGC, PCGS or ANACS it is likely over graded or inaccurately graded. The reason the coin pictured in the above ebay auction is going for way under the quoted price for a ms66 coin is because it is grossly over graded and likely cleaned...It is possible to find coins accurately graded or under graded in slabs from other companies than the ones i mentioned above, but it requires a keen eye and a studied knowledge of grading.

Properly grade 1921-s MS66 are very rarely, less than 100 have been reported by NGC and PCGS combine, they have been selling for minimun of $4000 at auctions. At that grade, the coin is almost perfect, very little mark. lf.jpg Here is an example of one.

The coin on ebay looks like a 61 or 62. It has some nasty bag marks on Liberty's neck and by the eagles wing. It looks possibly dipped as well. The big 3 grading companies are VERY strict on their grades, which is why serious collectors don't want to touch these other smaller grading companies.
