Hey, so I'm getting a $500.00 book voucher from Whitman Publishing pretty soon, only to be spent on books. That's enough to buy a good amount of books, so I need help choosing which ones. I have Red Book 2010. When do the newest ones come out, is 2011 out? Also I'm REALLY wanting to get into note collecting, are there any good paper money books out there? Also, can anyone refer me to the best Cherry-Pickers guide (for linccoln pennies); I've heard there's like 5 different versions? I'm really interested in getting involved in some more obscure stuff too; maybe even getting a taste of world coins, although I need to start out with something easy to collect. Your posts may sway my collecting habits for years to come! Graduating from HS this year means I will be getting a job soon, and as such, it's time I start vamping up my knowledge in this hobby if I'm going to keep having fun with it!
-2011 Red Book (Came out in April) -Red Book Price Guide to Lincoln Cents -Cherrypicker's Guide Fifth Edition, Volume 1 and 2 -Red Book Price Guide for U.S. Pattern Coins, Tenth Edition (Not that you'll need it, but it is still pretty cool to see what could have been.)
congrats on winning the essay contest. As for which books? Go to Whitman.com This is your opportunity to pick up some great books, and consider the leather and special editions.
I believe that this is the link for Whitmanbooks.com http://www.whitmanbooks.com/default.aspx?page=80&SubCatOID=97
That is really neat. I would consider leather volumes of reference books and paper of price guides that are changed annually, unless you are collecting the books.
These are the first ones I would select (but perhaps you already have some) Official ANA Grading Standards for United States Coins $16.95 2011 Red Book U.S. Coins Spiral $14.95 A Guide Book of Morgan Silver Dollars - 3rd Edition $19.95 Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents - 2nd Edition $19.95 Guide Book of Modern U.S. Proof Sets - 2nd Edition $19.95 A Guide Book of Washington and State Quarters $19.95 A Guide Book of Shield & Liberty Head Nickels $19.95 Guide Book of Buffalo and Jefferson Nickels $19.95 Guide Book of Lincoln Cents $19.95 A Guide Book of U.S. Commemorative Coins $19.95 A Guide Book of U.S. Tokens and Medals $19.95 A Guide Book of Peace Dollars $19.95 Handbook Of Ancient Greek & Roman Coins $14.95 A Whitman Guidebook: United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide $19.95 Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties Volume I - 5th Edition $39.95 Cherrypicker's Guide to Rare Die Varieties Volume II $39.95 Guide Book of Counterfeit Confederate Currency $29.95 Whitman Encyclopedia of U.S. Paper Money $69.95 A Catalog of Modern World Coins $19.95 Grading Coins by Photographs $19.95 TOTAL <$500 ---------------- Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins $49.95 United States Pattern Coins - 10th Edition $39.95 100 Greatest U.S. Coins - 3rd Edition $29.95 100 Greatest U.S. Error Coins $29.95 100 Greatest Ancient Coins $29.95
Good list, but I would swap out Grading Coins by Photographs $19.95 and A Whitman Guidebook: United States Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide $19.95 for Encyclopedia of Colonial and Early American Coins $49.95. He is just graduating HS, I don't think he needs two grading books and a Gold counterfeit guidebook really. I think the knowledge the Colonial and Early American book would give him would serve him well. If he really likes error coins, maybe bump up the 100 greatest error coins as well.
I would get some of the leather editions as well as some of the cheaper books. If I had that voucher the first on my list would be the limited leather edition of U.S. gold coins. With only 250 printed and signed as well.....that is sweeeeet! Take advantage of that voucher....it`s not too often when someone has that kind of money to spend on a good leather edition book. : )
I'll second (or third) the recommendation of the Leather Bound collector edition of books, in the years to come you will highly value them One more suggestion for your list. A Guide Book of The Official Red Book of United States Coins. by FJ Colletti. This book will really open your eyes as to the collectability and values of numismatic reference books. It's a good read and will give you a foundation of the last 60+ years of our hobby.
As for the Paper Money books, there are many. Check out this thread for a lot of suggestions on published materials: Information Resources for Paper Money Collectors
I actually just got the voucher itself today, I'm calling tomorrow to place my order. It's going to be the following 16 things: -2011 Red Book Spiral-Bound -Red Book: Guide to Lincoln Cents -Encycolpedia of Colonial and Early American Coins -History of the U.S. Mint and its Coinage -Cherry Picker's Guide V. 1 -Cherry Picker's Guide V. 2 -Grading coins by Photographs -Gold Counterfeit Detection Guide -100 Greatest U.S. Coins 3rd Ed. -100 Greatest American Currency Notes (Hardcover) -Whitman Encyclopedia of Paper Money (900 pages!) -Red Book Guide Book to U.S. Paper Money 2nd Ed. -100 clear currency holders -A guide book to U.S. Tokens and Medals -Small currency deluxe album (12 pages, holds 96 small notes total) * - Carson City Morgan Dollars Altogether it's $491.65, but depending on the tax and if they charge me shipping, I might drop the *CC Morgan book. I'm going to get a really great set of reference books for coins, as well as an awesome leap into notaphily, something I've been wanting to get involved in increasingly for the past few months. If for some reason the total runs under 500.00, I'm going to spend the remainder on extra paper money pages for the album (theyre like 2.50 apiece) Needless to say I'm really excited! I might post an un-boxing video on youtube and link it here to show you guys all my cool stuff!
