In numismatics, some objects attract extraordinary and disproportional attention. Those have abnormal prices which become news items for a day. Generally, coins are among the most common artifacts of any place and time.

This coin was issued to celebrate the centennial of Mohandas Gandhi''s birth -- about 30 million of them over two years, 1969-1970:
    Bombay Mint 10 Million circulating
    and 9 million Proof
    Calcutta Mint 12 million circulating.

So many of the Proof coins have been saved by patriotic Indians that the price for one is half of the Bombay issue in Uncirculated grade: 50 cents US or 1.5 new shekels.

But, if the history is interesting to you, then that is all that matters.

As an international focus for travelers, Israel must be awash with foreign currency. Generally, coins have no value: banknotes are legal obligations of the central authority, but coins are only tokens (generally).

If you offered 30 shekels for a kilo of mixed foreign coins, you would have a crowd outside your door.

Have you visited any coin stores?
