Hi All, I'm new hear and have a question relating to a 1958 wheat penny. I recently purchased about 20$ of unsorted wheat pennies. I used a magnifying lens to look at all the pennies, sorting the 10's 20's 30's while looking for irregularities. I came across a 1958 that looked normal except the 9. The only part of the 9 on the coin was the crown. It is like a half circle with a small blob on the left. I have looked very careful and there is no wear or dents to suggest damage after it was pressed. In fact with the exception of the color being dark the rest of the coin's lettering and numbers are very visible with very little wear. i was just wondering if anyone has seen this before or has any additional info. Thanks Patrick
Hi, Welcome to Coin Talk! What you're describing sounds like a die chip. Check the search function at the top of the page and you'll find several examples of them.
Hi Patrick and welcome to the forum. A photo would help us to be sure we aren't misunderstanding your description, but it sounds like a filled die. The parts of the coin that are raised are produced by the strike of a die with a recessed area. So on the die that strikes the coin, the date would be cut into the die, so when it strikes the metal of the coin, the metal will flow into the recess and when the die lifts from the strike, the date on a normal coin will have a raised date. The coin machinery requires lubrication and metal flakes can accumulate to make a very hard and stiff "grease". If this grease fills a recess in the die ( such as the missing part of your number, the metal can't enter, and when the die retracts the number will be incomplete or missing in that area. Often generally called a "filled die". Very common and little or no extra value. Jim
This one is a different date but die chips were extremely common on the 50's cents: http://www.cointalk.com/t49716/
Man sorry about the size ! I didnt think it would post like that. I will try and figure my pic settings next time.
Looks like Desert and Ikan were both correct about this. Looks like it's probably struck through which caused the tail of the 9 to be missing and also looks like it has a die chip in the upper loop of the 9.
Thanks, for all the replies ! I have certainly caught "the coin bug". I don't think I will ever get over discarding a 55 double stamp but the hunt continues..
