I have finally commenced my coin toning experiment. I am using an official mint bag purchased at a local antique store, along with 6 available silver coins. I placed the coins in the bag, carefully overlapping one over the other, and placed the bag in my hot and humid crawlspace, where they will live for 1 year, before being examined. This thread is being placed here for posterity, and for revelation of future results.
That's a neat experiment jerseycat10. Make sure you update us in a year. I'll probably forget about it by then, but if you post your results I'll remember it for sure. Good Luck!!
Just a suggestion , check them every month at least , in a year they could be completely black . rzage
You know that there is a federal bureaucrat whose only job is to run down and collect mint bags that have not been returned to the US Mint.
Great Idea! However, i would include a Morgan dollar, Washington quarter, and a Roosevelt dime in your experiment, as Peace dollars, and Walkers are not known series for producing toners. I am not saying that they DO NOT tone, but they are not as readily available as some other series.
I do not have base state images because they are all blast white unc., except for one of the peace dollars, which has a touch of tone on its periphery. If they are black after a year, i will just dip them. Thanks for your thoughts, and i am looking forward to updating everyone. Maybe i'll break them out after 6 months. Also i did not include other types of coins because i don't collect them.
Make you a bet - you take one of those coins in your picture, hold it upright, dip it halfway in some Tarn-X for 2 seconds. You'll find out it is not blast white.
Doug, the silver eagle already had a 2 second bath in e-z-est. The others, with the exception of one of kennedy's, appeared to have been bathed prior to my ownership.
Don't doubt it a bit. You should try what I suggested anyway, just so you see how fast coins actually tone.
