just curious what you all think the spot that bothers me is the deformation below the 1 in the date ... but maybe that's just a rim ding ... also the denticles (is that the right word?) seem a bit uneven.
I don't see anything that makes me suspicious. Uneven denticles are normal, it is more uncommon to see them be even all the way around.
I agree the wear on the reverse is not commonly seen like that, but it might have been a weak strike there or a pocket piece. I completely agree with Doug the denticles are USUALLY uneven, getting even ones are actually a chore to find. Nothing here at all makes me suspicious. Much tougher date than the later ones, making it a nice pickup for someone doing a set economically.
The bid price got too rich for me ... in case anyone wants to bid ... it goes off in 3 hours http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=270638883623&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
I have seen quite a few where the eagles right wing wears before the other. You have to remember these were very crudely minted coins and I see nothing that stands out to make this a bogus coin.
Well $202 was rich considering the uneven wear on the reverse and the obverse dark spot, but it really is much harder to get bust halves in the early 1800's versus the 20's and 30's, so be careful not to compare them.
