I like those shinning wooden boxes with golden packaging too. The part that I get challengened on, is opening the packaging from other sources than USMINT, and not damage the golden cardboard. I won't say which company I played catchup on the F.S., but that was a trick after damaging one box real bad when opening.

To be more specific to the main subject of presentation boxes - it is storing them that I get a little overwelmed with. I empty the boxes out anymore before storing in the safety deposit box. They were just taking up too much room at the bank. Someday, it will be a challenge to get them all in their rightful place again.

Also, has anyone noticed that the round plastic holders have been changed (smaller size rounds, not as thick?)

    Thanks Kripsy.

The different sized holders seem to fit the box fine. I sort of like the larger ones - makes the coin feel bigger too. (wink)

I don't have any FS coins, but I like the larger holders, they seem more roomy :D... At least it 'feels' like there's more protection if dropped ! Also reminds me of the amount of space that's around a ring type Air Tite holder. One could always buy empty capsules and boxes on eBay and swap coins into the same sized capsules for a uniform presentation.

The Mint changed the coin capsule for the FS series starting in 2008. I don't know why. I assume they changed supply vendors. Also, all the boxes produced during 2007, whether it is the single coin box or the 4 coin box, only fit those capsules.

Whatever those prices are, they are really high end retail prices and not really what the coins are worth if you tried to sell them.

I was at the Long Beach show yesterday and a dealer was selling a Martha Washington Proof for $675 and a Elizabeth Monroe Proof for $875. If I wanted them I'm sure I could have gotten them cheaper.

If you're selling, it's my experience that the 2007 coins basically sell for melt value.

The 2008-2010 coins will be sold for melt to most dealers as they see all First Spouse coins as junk and worth only melt. However, even the greysheet has started to post higher prices for the 2008 and more recent spouse coins so some dealers will pay a premium for the 2008 to date pieces.

But those prices posted by elaine are very optimistic or are maybe the retail prices for MS70 certified examples.

Thanks Mike. That's pretty much what I assumed, "high end retail". Knowing Elaine, those prices are probably collected from Apmex based on other threads that she has posted un-sourced figures for, in the highest price ranges to suit her upward bias... as you may know, she only posts the largest numbers she can find, the sun is always shining, rainbows and unicorns and PM cheerleaders abound!

Technically, all the 2009s have a Max Mintage of 40,000 so Taylors' would be more like 18.9%.

PS: I think Mary will be raised to 20K across both options.

Unless the Buchanan coin sells out the 15,000 max, I don't see any reason they would raise the max mintage on the Mary Todd Lincoln coin. I see people here repeatedly predicting that the Mrs. Lincoln coin will be very popular but I'm not buying in to that. Sure, it may be a bit more popular than the two Tyler spouse coins, but do you all really think more collectors are going to come out of the woodwork and jump into the First Spouse series for a Mrs. Lincoln coin and buy in larger numbers than the last three Liberty designs??? I seriously doubt it. Sure, there are tons of Lincoln collectors out there, myself included, who would pretty much buy anything Lincoln that is made by the Mint. But I think most of us really only care about Abe Lincoln and aren't as willing to jump all over a coin honoring his wife, especially at $800+ per coin!!! Perhaps if Abe was on the reverse of the coin, then I could see it selling in stronger numbers than the recent Liberty designs but that isn't the case.

So for those of you thinking the Mary Todd Lincoln coin will be super popular and bring new collectors to these Spouse coins, how about providing some back up reasoning to your prediction and help me understand :)

I was just reporting on the Mint's announced mintage caps; I should have said "I hear" rather than "I think!" I do think Mary will sell better than any '09 but probably not by much.
