this probably doesn't belong in this forum section but i can't post in the general discussion for some reason but this product is from the u.s. mint catalog so i guess that counts :goofer:

can anyone explain why this is $200? a piece of paper with the declaration of independence printed on it with probably $0.05 worth of paper and $0.25 worth of ink...

They might sell it to you for $189.95 if you request the removal of the attractive full color illustrated booklet. I've seen it listed but never bothered to notice the price. Seems like a $24.95 item to me (at most), not sure what commands the additional 175 bones.

    Leadfoot there is no spoon

Said simply, because the Mint is a money maker for the US Government.

I suppose some of the price can be explained by the Intaglio printing process, more time consuming. Buy yah, for that price it better come with a hand carved mahogany frame.

    Bingo.

It is a hand pulled print made from special engraved plates. As far as I know, the feds have never had this plate before, so it was done specially for the BEP (the Mint must have thrown it in their catalog also). The BEP sells small prints from it's hand operated Spider press for $30 or so (they do, or used to, anyway, bring this to major coin shows). So, 200 for a full size DOI is in line with that.
