when a grading company grades and slabs a coin do they ever designate that the coin has been dipped? they state it has been cleaned...isn't that the same thing??:smile

grading company don't desigate whether coin have been dipped, but it it was dipped too much that luster is gone, they would no grade it. generally except for silver dollars, if coins is old and it still look newly minted, then chances are it was dipped.
Dipping is a form of cleaning. However, if a gold or silver coin is dipped and rinsed properly, many (though certainly not all) believe it to be an acceptable form of cleaning.
Grading companies can also see dipping as acceptable, and there are quite a few coins that are graded that have been dipped. I personally, don't like messing with coins ever, sure I've experimented a few times, but I'd never dip or clean a coin with the intention of sending it in for grading. Just me though.
