OK, back to reality. Here is an 1879 Morgan in 'PRETTY GOOD' shape as the old time coin dealers used to say. It was in AU condition and that was it. What grade do you think it'll grade by today's standards.

    Thanks

Possibly AU-53. The reverse being a 55 and the obverse beinf a 50. The eagles breast looks very well full except for light wear on high points, the hair on Morgan on the other hand seems to be a little bit more worn down than should be. I also notice what I think is a rim ding @ 6 o'clock on the obverse. There is also a hit on Morgan's face.
My final grade would be either an AU 50 or 53.

I would say AU-50 because of the wear on the hair above the ear and the forehead. B12

I've heard there are various reverses on the 1879. Something to do with the fletching on the upper arrow. This one does appear to be different than the 1878.

Here is a link that shows the Morgan reverses. Most 1879's have the C reverse. The ones with the B reverse (reverse of 78) are in more demand and on the Top 100 list.

Although the reverse makes AU, the obverse does not, in my opinion. I may be wrong, as that issue isn't known for a particularly great strike.

What worries me more is what kind of contact created the contrast difference between the fields and the areas immediately surrounding the stars and lettering - it seems consistent throughout the fields. I'm not well-educated enough about circulated Morgans to know if that's normal circulation wear or not.
