I have several coins that I'm trying to identify. I'm posting a picture of a representative one; the others are similar with minor differences in the structure of the face on the obverse, and markings(or none) between the lines of the cross on the reverse. Can anyone direct me to a well-illustrated resource? I've been examining pics on several websites, but I've been unable to find any that are similar. Appreciate any help!
The obverse is, in fact, a castle. This design was very widely used, from France to the Crusader kingdoms. You'll have to read the legend for an attribution.
I'm pretty sure it's not French. While the design matches up to a denier tournois or an obole tournois, the legends are all wrong for the French coins.
Looks like a Crusader era Denier from the Duchy of Athens, minted in Thebes. Probably William de la Roche(1280-1287) Legends: THEBE CIVIS G DUX ATENES or something close to that.
Thanks for your help. I've been trying to decipher legends. WOW, it's a job. But fun. I settled on Guy II de la Roche, but there doesn't seem to be much difference between coins of William and coins of Guy II. Don't imagine it matters much, given the close similarity in obv and rev. I do appreciate your thoughts.
