Hi all, I have recently developed in interest in paper money. Till now I have been a coin guy. I also have a huge interest in Middle East paper money. I think it has really cool artwork. That being said, I am curious in the difference in these two bills: http://cgi.ebay.com/IRAQ-10-DINARS-P-60-ND-1971-/220554320921?pt=Paper_Money&hash=item335a0fdc19 and http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380224166884&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT The second one looks so much brighter and almost fluorescent with colors. The first one looks so dull. Is this simply a difference in how the poster photographed the bill, or is the second one really going to "glow" like it appears in the picture?
not entirely sure about this, but I looked at his other notes for sale and they all look like that. I have a feeling he plays with the saturation on the photos to get colors that bright. Here is another auction with your Iraqi note: http://cgi.ebay.com/Iraq-10-Dinars-P60-ND-1971-/300462565557?pt=Paper_Money&hash=item45f4f6e8b5 Check out this post of his: http://cgi.ebay.com/KYRGYZSTAN-50-SOM-2009-UNCIRCULATED-2-PCS-PAIR-P-NEW-/390206481716?pt=Paper_Money&hash=item5ada1e6534 vs the same note from a different seller: http://cgi.ebay.com/Kyrgyzstan-50-Som-2009-Great-Silk-Road-Building-/250683536878?pt=Paper_Money&hash=item3a5de735ee
Oh wow! That does put it into perspective. I agree with you on the saturation. Thanks for taking the time to look.
Nice job, beef. DF, welcome to the paper money hobby, and it sounds like your coin experience has kept you wary. I would echo the concerns about this seller. The bright note you post is listed as being VF, which is a quite worn note. Making it so bright will hide a lot of the wear, maybe getting someone to buy it who normally wouldn't have picked it out. If questioned, the seller might claim he correctly listed it as VF, and the fact that his "scanner is bright" or "your monitor is cranked up" is not his fault. Dave
Hi Dave, Thanks for the response and advice. I wonder, is there a good website to list and define the grades of currency? I have the Red Book for coins, what is out there for currency?
I would use the IBNS grading page (http://www.theibns.org/ and look under banknotes->grading) for some pretty good details on grading. Also I certainly recommend joining the IBNS if you're going to be reasonably serious about world banknotes. Dave PS: Whoops, missed the "list" part of your request. The general-purpose book is the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money (Amazon), and comes in two volumes for world notes, one is pre-1960 and the other is post-1960. You can get them as PDF files instead of a huge book if you like that route (I do, they're searchable).
Dave M's advice about the IBNS grading standards is on the mark if you are going to be lloking at world notes. The grading standards for world notes is much more strict than that used in the US particularly by the US TPG's.
