Are coins distributed according to their geography? What I'm saying is are there more S mint marks distributed out west, and P mint marks in the east, or are they distributed evenly throughout the country?

i may be wrong, but modern "s" coins are proofs from san francisco, which means they are distributed by orders from customers around the globe, not geography by bank.

The "S" could have been a typo as the key is right (umm, left :) ) next to the "D". And yes, as far as I know, the coins produced in Denver tend to be more common in the West; Philadelphia pieces appear in the East more often. At least that applies to newly issued coins ...

Yes, geography dictates coin distribution. We only get new "D" mint coins out here in California, although eventually a smaller number of Philidelphia mint coins find their way out, usually with some wear and tear on them. And we used to get new "S" mint coins back when the SF mint did produce circulation coinage.

Not sure about that..at least where i live (south TX) 95% chance you will get is Denver mint. The rest would just be P and its usually in dimes. Never actually seen an S mint coin besides a kennedy proof i found in a roll halves while roll searching.

I've been wondering about this myself. In the Austin, TX area I would guess I see about 95% Denver mint, same as Derekg. But I just got back from a week trip in Colorado during which I saved all my change. It was only about 75% Denver mint! I suspect there are areas supplied by the Philly mint closer to Colorado than my TX location.

In MA, the vast majority of [new] coins are from Philadelphia.

Pilkenton, although typically distribution can follow geography, there is nothing other than proximity that causes this to happen. Coins are shipped to banks from the Federal Reserve and they get whatever bag they get. Here in the midwest, we get a good mix of Ps and Ds, but for example, some S minted circulation strikes have been shipped and mixed specifically with Philly mint coins to discourage hoarding of those S minted coins in the past.

The Jeffersons last year were another good example as the coins only surfaced in Puerto rico where the banks on the mainland were re-circulating older coin.
