1990 Washington Quarter

2005 I received a very dark 1990 Washington Quarter. I noticed it didn't have any reeds. So I'm guessing someone cast it out of some type of metal, perhaps bronze? I searched online back then and didn't find anything so I gave up figuring it was fake. Any collectors find these types of fake coins?
