Amen to that ! I finally got a decent magnification with lamp that I can use with a loupe. It makes a lot of difference having better tools for the job. Currently, the biggest problem is taking a decent pic. But the graders don't care about that. Thank goodness.

But I hope to get better stuff in time. However, we all know this hobby is related closely to the plant in "The Little Shop of Horrors". It grows the more you feed it.

We're in the same boat. I'm looking for a good microscope that I can hook my camera to. I recently found a 1962 LMC DDO with some nice notching on Libery that is not listed at Coppercoins or Coneca but I couldn't image it to save my life. I sent it off to Jason Cuvelier and he got some nice images of it. Gotta feed that plant until I'm capable of capturing these things on photo myself though!

still a newbie, been collecting on and off and hoarding for thirty some years, only difference between the first day and now is I can usually spot a fake or rip-off or shady coin before buying, and have a lot more contacts to beg for help from when I need it!

Yes, research sure helps us spot stuff. I even saw a couple of fakes in some estate sale stuff not too long ago, that I would not have known about had I not been watching things here.

I've been collecting for six solid years and I'm still a newbie. While the first four years I was stuck without a car and only got what I pulled out of circulation, I have progressed a lot the last 3? Wow. Seven solid years. Forgot simple math I guess. Anyways I've definately progressed most in my knowledge since I found this forum and found a (now moved away *sadness*) dealer. I guess I realized when I was starting to learn a lot when I actually answered a few people's questions on here correctly. lol

You know, nearly every day I am seeing something new. I mean VAMs, trail dies, etc. There is just so much to learn and I have taken error coins to local dealers who didn't know the variety existed. Maybe we never stop being "Newbies" ? There is just too much to learn.

Perhaps when a day goes by that I don't learn something new I might consider myself being something other than a newbie. But I don't see that happening any time soon, if ever.

I have no doubt I will always be a newbie in this hobby. I have always wondered about something pertaining to this, and to explain I have to start off with a short story.

When I was a young lad I got a motorcycle. A neighbor of ours told me as long as I was afraid of it or doubted my abilities I would never have a wreck. This proved to be a very true statement. I hit a car and spent six months in a wheelchair and on crutches simply because I thought I was really a "hot" motorcyclist.

In coins I've often wondered about people who are not as good as they think they are in gradong and evaluating coins. The grading part is subjective, but I wonder how many of these people have fakes in their collection and don't even know it.

Well "I" unlike Chris, started collecting when internet was around but didn't know about "Forums" so I did a lot of research online and learned a lot by reading books which were available. Although I started in Forums such as this one, I was still considered a "newbie" but I think it's because there's always more experienced collectors out there.

I think that when you start teaching (preaching) others what you have learned with time, is when you no longer a "newbie". Sadly, there are some who think they know too much and start bashing others instead of learning and teaching knowledge.

I still consider myself a newbie because I am always learning something new but have enough knowledge to teach other, less knowledgeable collectors.

I believe once a person learns a little in all phases of collecting, your not really a newbie. Not one person knows everything about collecting thats why there are specialist in each catagory. I don't consider myself a newbie, but not far from it. There is not enough time in our life span to learn everything, so I just have fun picking up bits and pieces of info...
