Anyone know the best way to go about it with a top brand. NGC or PCGS I am sick of having my non-acrylic cased coins being at risk and want a professional opinion. Just dont want to bend over and take it for a membership fee, and a price per coin, surely there is another way right?
If you aren't a member of the ANA, join. ANA members can submit to NGC without having to buy their membership. It's still a membership, but it is cheaper and it comes with other perks. When you ship to NGC try to ship larger numbers of coins to same on postage and insurance. (Two five coin shipments will usually cost nearly twice what one ten coin shipment does. And since you have to pay shipping and insurance both ways that adds up fast.) Some people will ship thier coins priority insured or even express insured to try and get them faster. If the package weighs over 13 oz you will be paying priority anyway, but if the value is over about $700 ship them Registered and declare the value. Yes it will be slower, but it is actually much safer, and cheaper. And the higher the value of the package the greater the savings by going Registered. A $2000 package will cost twice as much Priority insured than it will Registered for the same amount. Also remember the maximum you can insure a Priority package for is $5,000. Registered can go up to $25,000. And for not much more than the Priority Insured $5,000 package. The initial Registered mail fee is higher than Priority, but because it is so safe the insurance rates are MUCH lower.
Join the ANA and you get the benefit of submitting to NGC, NCS and PMG without being a member of those grading companies. Also, you can go to a coin dealer with membership in the grading company of your choice and they will submit the coin under their membership.
While you can submit coins for grading in several different ways, as explained in the other posts, you still have to pay the grading fees. There is no way to get your coins graded and slabbed without paying for it.
Understood originally and sorry if I had made it seem like I was attempting to avoid grading fees, I understand why they are there. Just looking for a cheaper option
A couple people suggest joining the ANA. My experience with the ANA left me with a VERY bad taste in my mouth. Simply put, The ANA is now only about making money. In fact, a couple people that I have known for several years (Coin Dealors), will tell you the same thing. Let me just say, if I am looking for coins, the first thing I ask the person is if they are an ANA member. If so, I am VERY careful about what I might buy from them and really tightin up the price on a coin that I may be looking at.. In my humble opinion. - - - -

If you're looking for the cheapest way to get something certified by PCGS or NGC, piggyback onto someone's bulk order. The problem, of course, is that you have to find someone with a bulk submission compatible with your coins, since there are restrictions. Next cheapest way is to piggyback onto someone's order that's significantly larger than yours, and save yourself a little postage.
So nice to have somebody new show up and blow smoke out of his orifice... and painting everyone with one brush. The ANA is one of the oldest and largest numismatic organizations in the world, with over 20K members. Member's interests cover everything from pure numismatics to (unfortunately) flipping modern coin issues for $ (as if capitalism is some how evil by itself). The Numismatist is a highly respected journal tracing its history back to 1889 - and work is underway to make all of those issues available electronically (Yay!). Join ANA (money.org) and work to make things better from the inside. Now back to the OP... No, there is no way to submit to PCGS or NGC other than paying per coin. Whether you submit yourself or through a coin dealer, you pay per coin. You also pay shipping, handling and insurance both ways. Both companies offer several levels of submissions based on the turn-around time and value of the coin being evaluated. So you can submit at the 'economy' level for less $ but longer turn around time. As others have said, both organizations sell memberships and the higher levels cost more but include more 'coupons' for more 'free' submissions. So if you use all of your year's 'freebies' it's usually close to a wash. (the free ANA member tier at NGC comes with zero coupons).
Nice way to greet a new member & poster. If you WOULD HAVE read, I started by saying: " The ANA is NOW about making money..." key words: IS NOW. I did not ridicule the ANA, I just said my experience was bad. I think I have the right to my opinion, without getting blasted. My experience was leaving a coin with an ANA long time member to get it slabbed. This person, which I found out later was a real piece of work. After not hearing from this person for a long period of time, I tried contacting him. I had to track him down through the ANA because he had moved so many times. ( ie: staying ahead of the people chasing him.) This same person has been asked to leave his booth at the Florida Fun show and some other shows. The ANA said that they would conduct a hearing process with this person (whom they know), and try to get my coin back. The hearing process cost me another 150 bucks or so. When I did get a coin back ( I am not that sure it was the coin I had left him, just one like it. because this coin was one of those if graded up one grade, we are looking at $ 400 vs several thousand.). My feelings were if they knew this person as some of their board did, why couldn't the coin just be returned instead of me paying another $ 150 on top of what I had already in the coin. ?? And as you can see, I am not calling you any names. I'll let the people that read my response to your "rude" post, be the judge of how they feel. Nice way to spend your day, by attacking other people that are just trying to help out in responses. I am sure all your experiences with organizations and coin dealers have all been VERY POSITIVE.... Next thing you will say is how every coin organization is out there for the people and not looking to just make money...
If you have 5 coins worth over $300 each (cannot mix US/world/ancient together) then this is your cheapest option. The Premium membership costs less than the submissions would, and it gets you a one-year membership with submission privileges.
Are the coins worth slabbing? Air tights and Coin World style do-it-yourself slabs are great alternatives.
Welcome Dave. I don't really care for the ANA. I became a member just so I could submit to ngc but actually never sent any coins in that year. And it was quite difficult figuring out how I could be an ngc member, since nothing was set in place at the time. I felt like I just paid 50 dollars for an ANA membership that only gave me 12 magazines. Not that good of a deal, considering the magazine is full of out of state ads for classes, shows, etc. and I think their library is nothing special; I like to own the books I read, so I can write notes in them, etc.
