Which price guide book or magazine do you guys recommend purchasing? If it is a book do you purchase a new/current one yearly or if it’s a magazine quarterly?

I usually get my price guide from Numismatic News's monthly insert.

I am intersted in all notes but I guess I have more large notes on my wish list. I will check out the books you recommended.

    Is Numismatic News a magazine?

Yes. Also there is Coins Magazine which has a price guide.

price guides are just that, plain and simple. The best updated price guides for Paper Money are recent auction buy prices for that particular note.
Just like coins, it changes daily if not sooner. Check out Heritage, Lynn Knight, and a few others for recent sell prices.

Bank Note Reporter has a listed price guide as well but I always go with the Auction houses.

I agree with RickieB....the price guides are just that-PRICE GUIDES. It doesn't matter if the guides says it's worth $100 if it's selling at auction for $75.

think of a book that is published this year. the book started selling say 3 months ago. the book came off the presses say 6 months ago, the book was sent to the presses say 9 months ago. The data was entered into the book up to a year OR more before that.... see the pattern?

now what book do you want to buy for pricing? :)

As mentioned, they are very rough guides in thie volitle market! for the best in accurate pricing, i would search the active auction houses. Since prices flucatuate daily, they will be the best place for recent realized prices.

The currency newsletter or "Greensheet" as it,s called is a nice reference i also like the banknote
Reporter the only problem is they dont have Mpc listed which really blow.s my mind!!!

Your best bet is to use all the tools available to you price guides and listed auction,s which have
Ended and compare, this will give you a good average on worth and what to pay for any particular
    Note! :)

Just FYI for currency values, Coins Magazine only publishes paper money info occassionally, not monthly.

Are there any price guides for colonial notes? There is so little info on colonials. Currently I track EA, Stacks, HA auctions and of course E-bay. I feel that I have a handle on certain notes. Still, I would like a better guide than auction results as sometimes I think I got a good price and sometimes I think maybe not.

i dont know of a colonial guide, but thats not saying much. If you alread track all the major auction houses, keep a running tally in a spreadsheet of dates and prices - start you own guide. Some notes vary in price from day to day, heck even hour to hour. as long as you want the note - the price paid is worth it. The only time i really worry about getting a bargain is if i am looking to flip it.

For Retail I prefer the BNR monthly priceguide. For wholesale I use greensheet.
