Sounds good! Anyway, I was a bit confused, and found it odd that money would be produced entirely by a seperate company. Then again, it is an international bill. I have little experience in paper money, anyway. Well, I decided to look up some things on my series 611 Military Payment Certificate (pictured below). I had originally thought it was produced for Veitnam, but actually, it was made between 1964 and 1968, and distributed in Cyprus, Japan, Korea, and Libya. The portrait is of Queen Elizabeth II. I'm not even sure as to where I obtained this bill. Anywho, does this count as me being enrolled in the contest?
works for me. I haven't started collecting military certs yet but that one could get me to start. Someone had told me that the pictures were not of particular people (had never really checked to see if that was right)
Hm, i think it's her. I compared a picture of her to it, and they look the same. There's actually red and blue stripes all over the back. I always wondered what it looks like through 3-D glasses ^_^
This vignette of the woman is called "Tiara" and was engraved by M. Fenton, painted by C.R. Chickering. It is U.S. Military Currency...why would QEII be on it?? (she was never that good looking) It was issued on 01-06-64 and withdrawn on 04-28-69 Printed by The B.E.P. RB
Yes the level of detail that is engraved into US bank notes is amazing. I can't picture how they do it. I know it is some type of reduction but still.... So! I thought I would put a spin on my contest entry and not picture the whole bill just a detail I found that I think is quite funny. This poor guy looks to be a bit constipated.
I think they were short of just about everything at the time and used whatever they could find. These notes came from a large collection that I sold for a friend years ago. In retrospect I wish I had kept those two notes.
These are four different presentations of the "1" on a 1977 $1 bank note: The detail on the reverse is stunning:
One of the names listed around the edge of the educational 1 silver certificate is Bancroft, I had heard of every other name on the list, but Bancrofts name was unfamiliar to me I quickly found two Bancrofts that might be the one listed in the note, one was a minister and revolutionary war soldier, but the one intended in the note was George Bancroft, who was secretary of the Navy, founded the US Naval Academy at Anapolis, and wrote a history of the United States that was a popular text book in the 19th century. He passed away in 1891 at the age of 91.
There is debate if this is an owl or the spider that made the webing on the back of a 1. It was added in the 60's is the most info I could find on it.

Congratulations kRISPY, AND THANK you camlov for the contest, I think it was successful because I learned something about a figure in american history that I had not even known about, now if I am ever on Jeopardy and the answer is, He founded the US Naval Academy, I will know the question is "who is Bancroft"
I agree chip, this was a very educational contest! Everyone presented really great and beautiful details. Thanks to everyone for sharing.
