I was searching the Heritage Long Beach Auction tonight can came across a very unusual coin. A coin that I believe will be considered fantastic by some and dreck by others. So here is a call to all SLQ collectors. What do you think of this coin and how much would you pay for it? 1926-D NGC MS64 SLQ http://coins.ha.com/common/view_item.php?Sale_No=1144&Lot_No=9424#photo Finding SLQ's with rainbow toning is very challenging indeed. And although the coverage is limited to a small area at the lower reverse, the vibrancy of the colors is fantastic by SLQ standards. This is an important find for an SLQ collector seeking an affordable rainbow toned coin. However, the area that most SLQ collector's covet (the head) is almost non existent. This coin has about the worst head detail I have ever seen on an uncirculated SLQ. In essence, this coin defines the phrase "one man's trash is another man's treasure". So where do you stand? How much would you pay for this trash/treasure?
Boy your right about this coin.. That head would keep me away if I were putting a high end set together. Because of the toning, I am thinking the coin will bring $275-300. Personally, I wouldnt pay over $250 for it. Not one that would fit in a collection of SLQ's thats for sure. Be a nice addition to a type set though. Dang that head is really bothering me, first thing I see everytime I look at that coin.
I collect circulated SLQs in XF. Even with a decent amount of wear, all the coins in my collection have a better head than that coin. The coin depicted in the OP is a poster child for a weak strike. That being said, the grading criteria for SLQs does state that "Head details may be incomplete" all the way up through MS-65. Incomplete is one thing, but the lack of detail on that head is ridiculous. The head is just a blob. I personally wouldn't buy it. My guess is that it might fetch $200-$250 b/c SLQs above MS-63 are so hard to find any more.
It's because the die is worn(?). That doesn't affect a coin's grade. It's similar to FBL on Franklin Halves, however, the head of the SLQ is much more noticeable.
In fact for SLQs the TPGs have the "FH" or "Full Head" designation b/c so many were weakly struck. The FH designation usually commands a significant premium. Check out this SLQ as an example: http://cgi.ebay.com/1916-STANDING-S...59?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item563d3c94b3
The toning is moot with me on that one, I kind of like it and dislike it at the same time. Now the coin is still nice but I am with the others here as that head is just so obviously not there that it would bother me every time I looked at it. I'd have to pass too but think the 200 to 250 is fair.
just wait for a better one, it's not some major rarity. looks like a dremel tool was taken to the head. I wouldn't buy it for more than MS-60 money. It's uglier than my wife....same problem with no head there, BTW !
This was one of the Weakest strikes in the series , so much of my attention would be on the strike. The obverse in this photo, seems above average . I can't tell to much else , I need larger photos . I am partially blind now, so that doesen't help much. But if the Reverse is as pristine as the Obverse , this coin might bring in the neighborhood of $1,000.00-$1,500.00 P.S. The lack of a FH designation with this particular coin is a mute point to me, and the light toning is a major plus . +++
If you click on the Heritage link you can then click on the photos to get the supersized photos. You are right about the strike of this date/mm. According to Cline, STANDING LIBERTY QUARTERS, less than 1% of all coins have a full head and here are his comments about obverse grading of the 1926-D SLQ. "OBVERSE: Almost never a Full Head. The classic flat head of the series. Usually incused in head. Little, if any, design in shield and many rivets missing." Having said that, the head of this particular coin is weak even by 1926-D standards. I still believe that this coin could be and opportunity of the toning aficionado.
Slq I would have no problem with bidding this piece as I suggested. I havent looked at the heritage site as yet, but I will .
Now guess what , I was looking at the wrong coin on the heritage site, so I'm going to back peddle here a bit. While This Coin is still a nice coin , I don't believe it will bring as much as I previously suggested. It is a very typical 1926 D SLQ , with the weak strike , but it fits nicely into that 64 grade for sure . As I mentioned earlier , it is uncommon to find nicely toned examples , which again I think is a big + for this coin. . I don't think it will bring as much as I previously had thought. Probably right around $300 - $500.00 would probably be more accurate . I'll be watching the bidding .
Gotta agree with the above post!! Here's the bashed head I bought awhile back for $24.99 plus postage! I won't buy another tho b/c it just takes too much away from the coin!! just my 2 cnts!!
