Another reason to make sure you are properly storing your coins.

This coin came into the shop today. It looks like it's suffering from the end stage PVC damage. The damage only occurred where the coin was toughing the plastic it was in. This damage is only on the obverse meaning that the coin probably sat someplace face down in contact with the plastic. It's a shame because aside from the damage this was a gem coin and would have been worth several hundred dollars. As it sits... just a little more then silver.

Check your coins! Learn about PVC and it's damage and then protect or conserve your collection.

I found that with my junk collection. A lot of my better raw coins were left in Whitman folders and the paper did a number on them. And I found my mother had taped some coins into folders with Scotch Tape ! That ruined a few more. lol At least she had fun finding them in circulation.

Totally agree that improper storage ruins or devalues a lot of good stuff.

So what is the danger of the Whitman folders? Are they inherently bad or is it where you keep them or what? I have a lot of coins in Whitman folders.

I have all of my ASE's in plastic "airtight" protectors.. will those do the same thing?

I rather like the coin in the OP :) Let us know if you put it on eBay. Maybe I can do something with it.

The age of the Whitman folder has a lot to do with the inherent damage/advantage of them. The older ones were made of more acidic cardboard, and if stored under dry, low environmental corrosives, could produce nice "album" toning, and whether you like toning ,or not, some were more valuable to others due to the effect. If stored in bad conditions, acid rain type humidity, sulfur coal burning area of country, the toning often raced to corrosion, and the coin had little numismatic value. It is not just Whitman, most folders were the same. Newer manufactured ones are made of paper with less sulfur I have read. I often stored common Lincolns, dimes, etc. that are 3rd or 4th collection in folders, some well over 30 years, and with some care, they are doing fine.

Even the Air-Tite holders are not really air tight, nor are slabs--so unless care is used with these also, you will get chemical reaction if you live or store them in the wrong environment.

No... from the Air Tite Holders (manufacturer's) web site:

...but indeed they are not air 'tight' and coins can tone, oxidize, etc.

I was just going to say, NCS might be able to make that coin like new...for a price.

I'd be surprised if NCS can fix that one.
But I've been surprised before :D
